I've been playing these hit-and-miss for a few days and finally made my way through the whole thread this morning.  What a wonderful collection! Great idea Charlie and Richard.

I believe the Star Bangled Banner by Richard and Battle Hymn of the Republic by James are the best renditions of these songs that I have heard.  Both sung in an understated style that allows the words and music to carry the show.  Awesome!  I wish people that sang SSB and BHOTR in public would listen to these.

Charlie:  I couldn't get your link to work for me - sorry.  Went to your page but couldn't find it.

Then there is an inspiring collection of instrumentals by Brad, Dom and Bill.  Great playing, all and the variety of instruments used worked out very nicely for this collection.

Will, Clay, jbulford and Cindy sing moving songs of sacrifice and the entries of Jim, Mike and 1four5 record scenes of Americana that remind us why people are willing to make them.

Every song moved me - and it hangs together nicely as a collection. Thanks to all for the reminder to count my blessings!

Scott

Hey Scott,  I had trouble with my site for a few day and I erased my song by mistake and plan on doing another, I had two songs on my site by the same name and erased the wrong one, I plan to do I don't know what, but I'll come up with something,

There are a great bunch of songs that all the members have put up, so it will be a good program I know.

Charlie

I did another that might be able to use in this list of songs for the Fourth of July

When I was in the Naval training center, I got to know the bugler and since I had played the trumpet in school, he would let me play taps at night and I really enjoyed  doing that for the whole base.

Taps

   play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)
download hi-bitrate (1.07 MB

My apologies for being so late in contributing to this project.

I knew that I  wanted to do something with Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land.

I also knew this:

“The anthem of unity and beauty which so many children learned in school was actually written in response to the equally reverenced "God Bless America".  ... Woody was infuriated with the lack of realism and the message of complacency in this song which infiltrated the nation's air waves. In response, he wrote "God Blessed America For Me" which later became "This Land Is Your Land".”

from  AMERICAN STUDIES at the University of Virginia

So I endeavoured to create a sort of a medley:

It took me awhile to put it together and teach it to myself.  I still can’t play it all the way through without a noticeable mistake.

Next I had to try to jury rig a way to record it and get it uploaded.

I’ve uploaded it to my own site because it’s copyright material.

It’s a day late; it’s a dollar short; it’s crude, but here it is:

This Land Is Your Land / God Bless America

 Play Hi Bitrate
 Play Lo Bitrate

Tony -

Great song! I have been looking for those two verses for about a year, now. Where did you find them? I have heard a lot of Woody's stuff and it rings in my soul. I need to get busy and transcribe his "Smithsonian" sessions (several LP boxed set) to CD. Haven't listened to it in years!

Brad

(Nice banjo work - I can do the This Land portion, but will have to work on "America."

The lyrics to God Blessed America for Me, (the original version of This Land Is Your Land,) as well as the above clickable image of the draft in Woody’s own hand, are available at the aforementioned AMERICAN STUDIES at the University of Virginia site.

A complete set of more recent lyrics is available on THIS PAGE of The Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives site.

More interesting info and links are available on this Library of Congress – Patriotic Melodies page.

I believe the Rise Up Singing songbook also contains all the verses.

The lyrics I sing are variations, (as is the wont of the ‘folk process’,) learned from the recordings of various artists, including Woody, The Weavers, Arlo, and Bruce Springsteen.

Dean-

You guys (and gal) are really ringing the bells in my mind lately (or is that blowing the windmills?)!

When I was just a lad knee-high to the Jackrabbits in my neighborhood my dad used to play the piano after we 3 boys were put to bed - in the forlorn hope that we would drop off to sleep quickly. One of our favorite medleys was the one you posted here - in the exact same order!

Nice work!
