Another thread about chords for Shady Grove brought up the idea that this is a great song for the Co-Op area!

Get busy, guys and gals!

I know that the other thread had chords and words...any possibility of getting the whole song with all the verses? Or were they all there?

Most of them are probably there, but, like all folk music, I think you can find many more verses out and about. Google for "lyrics" and "Shady Grove." I haven't had a chance to do that yet.
Or, add your own! The folk process lives on!

:2banjo: Keep on pickin'
Brad

edit: I just did a quick google for: "lyrics + "Shady Grove"" and got 2320 hits!

Here is a text file with several versions, many verses are the same, but there are a bunch on different ones there, too. Pick and choose.

Thanks, Richard.
I think Dean knew about them, but was looking for some others, too. I grabbed about 5 or 6 sites and put them in the file I attached. (I was doing this while you were adding your post). :D

Here's one I found in a search

Dm             C
Peaches in the summertime
Dm
Apples in the fall
   F               C
If I can't get the girl I love
                     Dm
I don't want none at all

Dm           C
Shady Grove, my little love
Dm
Shady Grove, I know
F            C
Shady Grove, my little love
                    Dm
I'm bound for Shady Grove

Wish I had a banjo string
Made of golden twine
Every tune I'd play on it
I wish that girl was mine

Wish I had a needle and thread
Fine as I could sew
I'd sew that pretty girl to my side
And down the road I'd go

Some come here to fiddle and dance
Some come here to tarry
Some here to fiddle and dance
I come here to marry

Every night when I go home
My wife, I try to please her
The more I try, the worse she gets
Damned if I don't leave her

Edit...holy cow, we was all working on this at the same time! Thanks you'all, lots of options now!:)

Hey, It's Co-op time again.

Thanks for the lyrics Dean, and thanks to Brad for the suggestion. I'm not much of a tailor, so I left the sewing out. I recently purchased new equipment and decided that "Shady Grove" would be a perfect song to try it out with. I've always liked Ricky Skaggs' happy version, but I think the sadder Doc Watson knocks the pants off of Mr. Skaggs'. But that's just me.

Vocals: Leave something to be desired

Let me know what y'all think of the equipment. Personaly, I think it is about a thousand times better than my old desk mic. I still can't sing worth a lick, but now you get to hear me not hit the right notes much more clearly.

Have a good weekend.

Guat-

Nice version! I think you're gettin' the hang of it!

The new equipment sounds very professional - one day I've got to upgrade my mic.

:2banjo: Keep on pickin'
Brad

(Now you can pick up a banjo, and add more tracks :P )

Way to go Guat!!! You broke the ice with a great recording! Now I just got to get some time (from practicing Christmas songs) and give this song a whirl! :)

Finally got some time to try this one. Don't expect much, I spent a few minutes with the chord progression, and just let my finger do whatever they wanted, then added the vocals and liked the first take enough to keep it. :)

Shady Grove

Edit...oh yeah, I played it on my Jenny bari

:headphones:I'm listening right now, and I like the first take. Sad and lonesome as they come. Sounds like your fingers know what they are doing. I don't know if the bari pickin' helped the banjo pickin, or vice versa, but I like hearin' it.
Keep 'em coming

Thanks Guat!:) I'm definately picking my uke (and tuning it) like a banjo.

That's really good James, I LOVE it, especially the wondering lonely harp in the background. Beside, your thick accent is always cool to hear...especially to a Kansan

1Four5-
I like the bluesy sound you get. The Bari fits your voice perfectly (you been takin' singin' lessons?)!

James-
The Irish brogue really fills out your version! Very nice!
Now, I gotta get busy and get my version up!

:2banjo: Keep on pickin'

Thanks Guys ! This is the first time i ever performed "Shady Grove". A cool song with a lot of conjured visions in the lyrics. Irish Brogue definately on the mark. LOL

Quat, what a great improvement on your recording, nice Uke touch, it was your air that i based my version on, pretty cool sound you got there.

1four5, man, dont be so hard on your singing ! your vocals on this one was different and in a good way. Chord changes were very pleasant to the ear and this track has a great feel to it, nice job man :thumbs1: very creative.

BB version still to come, look forward to it, wow, what  great variations on this song.

Thanks for the lyrics guys,

James C.

Thanks a ton Brad, James and Madog. You guys are very encouraging!:) I really enjoyed this one and needed the break from practicing Christmas songs. I think that's why I stuck a G chord in the song...I had been practicing christmas tunes for a couple hours, and my hands just automatically went to a G, even if it didn't belong in Shady Grove:shock::cool: Looking forward to hearin your version Brad! As for singing lessons, nope...sometimes I just get lucky, but then, I'm hanging around some good singers, and trying to get some of it to rub off:D

Hey Mad Shad, welcome to ezFolk. Man, you win...that's the darkest version of Shady grove! Very interesting, thanks for joining us! I like your ending, but then, I like dark bluesy stuff:tears::2uke:
