Okay... maybe the co-op idea's not dead. House of the Rising Sun is a great song that almost everybody knows, and since there's some interest let's go for it. If you don't know it I'll provide some links below where you can learn it. So far James Connolly and I both have two recordings of it, and we'd like to have everybody who is willing to add their version(s) as well.

After you upload your MP3 be sure to post a follow-up message here with a link so we can listen. There's no longer a "Co-Op" genre so add it to any genre of your choice.

Here are links to the songs that are already online:

James Connolly (1): HiFi - LoFi

James Connolly (2) (lots of harmonica) HiFi - LoFi

Richard Hefner (Clawhammer Banjo)  HiFi - LoFi

Richard Hefner (Guitar)  HiFi - LoFi

If you need tab or chords, here's where you can find it...

Guitar (several arrangements):

Clawhammer Banjo:

Richard-

"House" is a great idea - I have been thinking of doing it since guitar class last week renewed my interest in it.

You might check, however, the "lyrics" link from the clawhammer tab appears to be broken.

I'll have to get it on here soon.

Brad...

Thanks for letting me know about the broken lyrics link on the banjo tab page. It's fixed now...

At a coffee house open mike last week, a bass player/free verse poet did a poem on New Orleans (current travail) to the tune of HOTRS. I played guitar behind him and a sax player joined in. It was pretty damn good.

Discovered a neat chord transition along the way. In the passage "and (C7)me, oh (B7)Lord was (Emi)one. (We were obviously in Emi)I played the C7 with the base note on the sixth string (G) and instead of going to the normal full B7, I pushed the C7 back one fret as I rolled the notes in the chords. It was a very smooth flow of musical tones and resolved to the Emi perfectly. It works even better with finger picking styles.

FINIALLY got that bugger chord progression to sink in. I had tried this song like a year ago, and CMac and Tim3finger could play it, but man...for the life of me I just couldn't keep it straight. Anyways, as usual I can murder any song. The B-1's started working on it this week, so I decided to use today to practice it, and it sounded good enough to record, so here's my personal version. It's probably one of my sloppiest most mistake ridden recordings...but I'm pushing my limits and I like it. 3 tracks, Vocals, banjo, and my old Yamaha parlor guitar.

Rising Sun HiFi

Rising Sun LoFi

I was doing some research for alternate lyrics and ran across this page:

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mrisingson.html

Interesting take on the song's origins and history.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Great take! It sounds like things are coming together for ya!
(Where did you locate your lyrics? Can I get a copy? I like to find different lyrics.) BB

Hot Dang Dean!
Thems some hot licks.

I am pretty ashamed of my version now...Maybe if got a little more fancy with an extra charango track...and took the mic away from the dying cow that likes to sing on my songs. I did like playing the bari though. Plus I actually used the pick-up for the first time on my Lanikai.

I lcan't wait for the B-1's version, and hopefully some more ezfolkers will work on putting me to shame too. I look forward to it.

Hey man, I LOVE yours guat!...you know whats really cool is the beginning sounds like stairway to heaven:uke: Your voice sounds better than mine! I think it's one of those "Hate to hear yourself" things. This is fun:beer:

Thanks for the encouragment you'all. Brad, I used the Animal's lyrics, except I changed the Gambler to a Preacher:angel:

Here's the Animal's lyrics:

The Animals
HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

------ organ solo ------

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Thanks Dean,
I thought this might be of interest to some of you guitar pickers out there. This feller really goes into some depth of how exactly to play HOTRS and even has sample mp3s.

Best of luck to everyone.

Here is my version, with 12-string guitar accompaniment, using The Animals' arrangement of the song:

This is just great guys, i love to listen to all the versions of different artists perform  this classic. It takes me to a different place every time.  Bravo to all so far

Was anyone aware that the "House of the Rising Sun" was a Hotel in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the 1800s and owned by a French woman of the same name. They have recently discovered lengerie and rouge in an archeological dig and are preserving the site for a new hotel with the same name.

The first known recording of the HOTRS was made in 1937 by a music historian named Alan Lomax, he learned it from a miner's daughter in Kentucky, it was known then as Rising Sun Blues, pretty interesting stuff.

This info came from "The Nation" newspaper of Los angelus. CA. I cant say it's gospel as they are still looking into it.

I'd like to second sheamrock's applause. Good job to all so far. I am still waiting on the B-1's version, but patience is a virtue I guess...

On the topic of Alan Lomax, he did some very great work, and all of his books/recordings seem fairly applicable to the genre of "folk" music. I highly suggest everybody take a look at what their local library has on hand. So far in town, I have picked up a few discs like "Mississippi Saints and Sinners" "Texas Prison Recordings" "Appalachian Strings" "Bad Man Ballads" and "Leadbelly's last sessions."

Local and college libraries are a great place for us, and I highly encourage any folkie here to look Mr. Lomax's work up.

Thanks Will! That's beautifull, and man that 12 string sounds great!:thumbs1::beer:

Been busy fall (work etc...) for the B-1's, as we try to get practices in and prepare for commitments. Also, military schools and some family illnesses have taken priority for a spell. It's coming though...guaranteed!

James-

Check out this link for info on the song, too:

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mrisingson.html

Alan and his son, John Lomax did a great deed in the preservation of American folk music. I have Alan's Folk Songs of North America, and use it for a lot of my stuff, as well as several sites on the web, like the sacred songs site, the contemplator's site, LOC (Library of Congress), Max Hunter and the Wolf Folklore Collection. I'll try to dig up the actual links and post them later today.

Thanks, everyone, for your compliments.  And thank you, Richard, for suggesting this song as a co-op effort.  I, too,  have really enjoyed listening to all the different renditions that have been posted.

The co-op song is a great idea that deserves to be continued.

The information on the archeological work on the House of the Rising Sun, was from the Los Angeles Times, March 20th of this year, in a sub-section called "The Nation", which deals with news from across the US.

The original article was a from a New Orleans newspaper, The Times Picayune.

The site of the dig is located in the French Quarter on Cont St, between Chartres St and Decatur St.  Hopefully the recent flood did not do major damage to the site.

I'm hoping to see more information later when the place is cleaned up.

By the way, I just realized that my "User Name" makes no sense to the people here.  So for purposes of permitting brickbats and ripe tomatoes to be thrown in the right direction:  this is DUSTY LEER.

:wave3:

My feeble attempt is here:
