WOW!!! Dusty, what a recording and incredable story you told there!!! That's the best version of the song I ever heard! What was really cool, is that it's early in the morning, I aint woke up yet, and I was zoning on your avitar as I was listening to your song while sipping coffee. Your avitar pretty much keeps a good beat and fits the mood of the song perfectly:) Thanks, what a way to start the day!

Dusty-

Nice take.

Hey, which Lake Forest do you reside in? The one I'm most familiar with is near Tahoe City, I lived in Truckee for 19 years until 2003.

I was just browsing through the songs posted on the site and ran across HOTR by Harold Morton.

WOW! is about all I can say. I had to immediately add it to the Prickly Pear Radio playlist. The flamenco riff on the intro is worth the price of punching it up!

Great job, Harold, I love your guitar playing.

Thanks 1four5, I confess that I added a few verses to the commonly known ones.  I like "story songs" and I felt that the Lomax and other versions seemed a little incomplete.

As is, or should be well known, the original tune dealt with a young lady who "fell in with evil companions and ended in sin."

I learned that tune with the minor modal from Dave Van Ronk.  Over the years I warped it a bit to a more bluesy vein.

That is a live recording that was actually done at a performance Tuesday the 11th this month.

Banjo Brad, Thanks to you also.  The Lake Forest that is "graced":2smiledevil: by my presence is in Southern California.  The name was changed from El Toro a few years ago.

It is next to the old USMC airbase of El Toro.

I know the Tahoe area well.  Tahoe City, Truckee and surrounds were home for me and mine for a few years, and Harrah's at So. Shore hated to see me coming.:2blush:

Built a Chalet in Sierra City back in the 70's.  As much as I like the Sierra's, my lust is for a nice piece of land on the north coast or even on the inland passage in British Columbia.

My wife, on the other hand, favors Arizona and New Mexico.

I like your version and have it on my "Playlist" even if not on my Rstation.

Keep it up, and as I said earlier, I do like your talking blues about the cafeteria.

Thanks again all.

ADDENDA:  You are right Morton is fantastic on HOTR.

I know about El Toro, I just didn't realize the name had changed!

I spent 21 years of my working life in SoCal - 1964-1984. Worked for General Telephone (became GTE, now Verizon) in the Santa Monica, West LA, Mar Vista, Culver City area. My grandparents lived in West Hollywood for many years before that.

Personally, I always preferred Harvey's.

(Of course, you know, I hate you! I had dug up Abdul Albulbul Ameer off of the web and was going to suprise the site with it, but found it in your stuff! I first learned that one at YMCA camp in the 50's.)

I apologize for pre-empting Abdullah.  Next time I intend to post an old ballad I'll check with you first.   ;)

Well, if you want, you could remove about half your songs ;P

(I hope you realize I am and was pulling your leg! Although it looks like I better not pull too hard, there ain't much holding it on!)

Ooh, Ooh, I just thought of a song to do!!!

"Dry Bones"

I'd better get started!

I do indeed know you were Pulling.  :thumbs2:  Fortunately, my mama made sure they were well attached, and was into giving it a yank now and then herself.

Dry Bones is a good one.  I was thinking of it the other day, but put the idea aside to relearn a half-dozen children's songs instead.

You would be great on "Knick Knack Paddy Whack".  The old number song:

"This old man he played one,

He played Knick Knack on his thumb,

With a Knick Knack Paddy Whack,

Give the dog a bone,

This old man came rolling home."

Just in case the title did not ring any bells.

You would also shine on some of the Child ballads and the Liverpool seashanties.  Your voice would be perfect for those.

Don't forget.  We get excerpts from your "command performance".

Dusty-

Interesting you should mention "This Old Man", I tabbed out a clawhammer tab to it a couple of years ago and Richard posted it in the clawhammer banjo section. I'll have to work on adding a little something and recording it.

I like sea shantys and have been thinking of some of them, along with the Child stuff, which I really like as well.

Maybe we oughta think about a collaboration on "Dry Bones"? I gotta find a chord sheet and words, it's been over 30 years since I heard it!

That sounds like fun, Brad.  When you are ready, pick a key, run up some banjo and vocals and record it.  Then send me a Lyric sheet and a MP3 cut, and I'll whack out some Gittfiddle and harmony.

Then we can discuss warping it all into a "band" production.  I can work with a MP3 cut easily.  Drop me a EM and we can hammer on the idea.

I'm way late to the party put I've put up a version done by me and Hillary.  It's pretty standard except verses 3 and 4 have two vocal parts and verses 5 and 6 have three.  Amazingly enough, we took the lyrics modified from the original to suit a male vocal - then had a women sing it!  What were we thinking?

Our take of "House of the Rising Sun" is at:

Very nice Scott! The harmony's great... I'm not sure I've ever heard it harmonized like that.

Thanks Richard!  Thanks Brad!

We really enjoy coming up with harmonies.  We worked out two different harmony parts for this song and couldn't decide which to use - so we kept them both.  We eased into it though to try to add some build into the song.

Before finding this site, I had only heard three different versions (beyond those of all my guitar playing buddies) - Dylan's, the Animals', and that of a late 60's band called the Frigid Pink.  It's really fun to hear all the different interpretations here.

Scott

This song, when played at a moderate to slower dirge like tempo, is actually one that I really enjoy playing along with on my musical saw. While playing music with my saw on the street at the Pike Place Market the other day someone requested this one. I explained that I had never played it unaccompanied on the saw before. Being mostly fearless from years of tossing caution to the wind whilst flexing the razor sharp spring steel teeth of the unruly blade betwixt my knees, I'm willing to try just about anything with my saw, musically speaking. I gave it my best effort and it sounded wonderful! It is now offically one of my favorites as a solo saw number.

I wish I had the means to  record my saw version and add it to the list. Perhaps further down the road, when being a daredevil becomes a more rewarding means.

Saw ya later, Reg

Reg:

Looking foreward to your "cutting edge" rendition! You don't have a computer mic? How about a buddy with a tape recorder?

If I could get a sound file, I could convert to mp3 so you could post it.

My guess is that it sounds okay until you get through to the steel truss rod, then you're gonna get some nasty grinding...:2angdev:

Brad,

I've got a mic, several actually, and a better than average sound card but not one specifically set up for low audio latency, like the kind they sell in music stores to folks who want to set up a home studio. I wish I had the green to dream big and outfit myself with such toys of the trade. I even have some software for recording, though probably far from the best. The problems seem to be,

(1) that latency issue. I can't get the music, once recorded, to play back correctly. There are entire pieces of the recorded song that are just missing in the play back.

(2) The noisy fans on my computer interfere with recording too close to my machine. It's one that a friend put together for me and as such probably does not contain the best of the best in this case.

(3) Heck, if I could afford real instruments I wouldn't being playing around with handtools in the first place. ;o)

So, I'm not able to record anything with this configuration that's of any use. Once the software saves my work it seems to save it in a proprietary file type that is only used by the software program. I'm not able to figure out how to save it in a standard sharable format. I actually became rather frustrated with the limits of this program and gave up trying to work with it sometime ago. Maybe now, with a fresh look at it after so long a time, I'll be able to sort through the geekspeak and iron out my difficulties. I'll keep you posted as to the success of my efforts.

Saw ya later, Reg

Reg-

My mic is a radioshack  lapel mic for computer (model 33-3026).
What is your recording software? I use n-Track, and have Pro-tools Free that I can use.
What is the .xxx file type that your stuff is saved in?
Maybe we can figure out some way to do this.

Guat-

Nothing against banjos here brad.

I thought your phrasing of what a banjo and saw would sound like together was asking for a snappy response. Forgive me if my response was less than snappy. Maybe I should have posted it in the "jokes" forum.

Keep on pickin', and I'll keep grinnin'
