Last month Erik Darling, the founder of the Rooftop Singers, and a superb 12 String player left us to join the angels.  Erik played with Pete Seeger, the Weavers, and did studio work for many others.

He is most noted for the Rooftop Singers and the rendition of Walk Right In that they did.

Some time ago the thread on 12 string guitars was started, following that was a discussion of Walk Right In.

I've not played 12 for some years, but I did do a poor attempt to do the deed, and honor Erik by playing Walk Right In.  I, of course, put my own twist on it, and here is a video of the performance at one of my shows.

The video is not great, (too much shadow), but it answers some questions asked of me early in these forums.  Yes, I hack at the 12, I will be practicing a bit now.  Yes, I do Walk Right In.  And no, I don't copy anyone that I know of.

Here's the link.  Dusty butchering the 12, and the song.

Feel free to throw tomatoes and give rousing Bronz Cheers.

My goodness Dusty,  If you call that hacking,  I hope I can learn to hack that way

I think you did a fine job of doing the song.

Thanks Charlie.  But the guitar is very sloppy.  I really have no excuse.  I just haven't picked it up for 2 or 3 years, and really should practice.  I confess.  I really don't "practice" at all.

I do run through a tune or two now and then, and I've learned a half-dozen new tunes this last month, but "practice" I don't.

I really need to do so and bring my technique back up to an acceptable level.

Glad you liked the tune, Walk right in, and Delia's gone, have been two of my favorites.  They both sound great with a 12 played properly.

But I stick by the "hacker" designation.  Like Dave Van Ronk, I'm just a Sturm and Drang man. :P

I really enjoyed the video Dusty.  When I was about 16  (1963) I bought a $30 acoustic guitar and my mom gave me a few lessons for my birthday.  That was the only song I ever learned to play from memory.  I quit after a few lessons because all the teacher wanted to do was sell me an expensive hollow body electric guitar.  I quit music right after that after my mom told me I couldn't sing, but I can still play that song (with 6 or 4 strings).  Thanks for the memories.  The Rooftop Singers had a big hit with that song.  I think Peter Paul and Mary also recorded it.

Come on Dusty, I'm from the Bronx. I know when a cheer is necessary. you did just fine. And as a true homage should be, you didn't reproduce his version of Gus Cannon's classic jug band song, you made it your own.

Also Erik had his trio singing and playig with him. And before anyone corrects me, it was simply the Rooftop Singers, not Erik Darling and the Rooftop Singers.

Brad and I and a few others were talking about Erik's life, times and politics a bit south of here. He was a complex, gentle and interesting man. While a superb guitarist, I loved the purity of his frailing.

Dusty:

"Walk Right In" is a personal favorite of mine, and you did a great job playing and singing it - a fitting tribute to the late, great Erik Darling.

I learned the Rooftop Singers' version of the song by ear, and I also play it on a 12-string, but I play the melody on the higher strings rather than the bass strings.  I was lucky enough to have 3 other musician friends (dobro, guitar, and bass) join me on this recorded jam version:

Nice job there, Will. Too bad the miking was not better. Not a complaint, just an observation. I'd like to hear you guys with a good setup. Very nice work overall, but the Dobro and 12 shine.

Phil Thanks. Yes, it was the Rooftop Singers as a group and not ED and. I think I have thier first album still. It's been a while, but I'll have to sift through my albums. I've a wall of vinyl that I play now and then. Not the wall itself, of course, but an album or two from the racks. (Grin).

WRI has been done by a number of the singers and groups from the 60's, but I think the RTS did the best job on the tune.

Dusty, have you heard the original version by Gus Cannon and Cannon Jug Stompers from sometime in the 1920's? THey have an energy and and a joy of life that is something really special. Erik Darkling fan that I am, Gus Cannon's version was better.

Melody is petty much the same, the raw primitve sound of the orginal's background rhythem is excellent. Of course the excreable recording of the day and near 100 years of transfer from one medium to another hasn't helped.

Check your email.

Here's a full MP3 link of the 1929 recording by Gus Cannon & The Jug Stompers - it's played in the key of C:

Will, you beat me to it.  I was going to post the same link, but here's the main site.  Lots of PD to sort through if one has an interest.

Yes, Phil I have heard it.  In fact it's in my "oldies" collection on the computer.

I just search my computer for the Gus Cannon version and oddly enough, found it. I'm listening to it as I type. Utterly brilliant.

Well, it took so long for my computer to finish sending you something that it is indeed an oldie by now. Just toss it or pass it on.

I found it in MYMUSIC/BLUES/JUG BANDS. Just counted. I have 67 tunes (with a few repeats) of the Cannon Jug Stompers and their long time rivals The Memphis Jug Band. But we are swerving this thread.

Dusty:

Thanks for your compliments.  That recording was from an informal jam held this past January at the house of my Loose Change & Friends band mate, Lee (electric bass).  Joe, the dobro player, was jamming with us for the very first time.  Stu, Lee, and I had jammed two times before, but our previous jam was almost 2 years prior, and we really don't get to jam on a regular basis.  We really weren't set up to record - I had just bought a Zoom H4 digital recorder and I had set it up on a camera tripod located between the 4 of us, and I used only the 2 built-in mikes.  For whatever reasons, my vocals don't seem to record as loud as others (yet, I'm told that I have a fairly loud voice;)).  I've re-posted the edited MP3 without any added reverb - hopefully, the reposted MP3 improves the clarity of the vocals and instruments.  By the way, our recording of "Walk Right In" was a first take, without any prior practice whatsoever.  (That's my kind of jam.)
