Chris Pearline inquired in one of his threads how to post song links.

I thought I would answer it in a separate thread, so that it could be referred to by others who might be asking the same question.

I have found what I think is a very easy and elegant way to add song links to your posts.  Amy, this is quite a bit easier and more elegant than the way I showed you before:
Go to your music page and choose the song or tune you wish to present.

Select the link or links you wish to post by clicking and holding down the left mouse button while you drag the cursor from the beginning to the end of what you want to post.

In the example below, I have selected both play hi-bitrate and play lo-bitrate of the song, Promise Me Nothing.

Copy the selection.

Go to the forum, start a post, and

Paste the copied links into your post.

Here are the results of that operation in the example above:

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)

Notice that I have had to do only one copy and paste procedure to post two links - hi-bitrate and lo bitrate.

You can edit anything outside the link, and you can move the link.  (You can edit inside the link, too, but that can be a little tricky.)

In the example below, I have added the song title to identify the link, deleted the text that came with the link, but is not part of it, and centered text and link.

Promise Me Nothing

play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate

This will work for e-mail as well.

I hope this has been helpful.  And I welcome any suggestions on how to make it more helpful.

Hey Tony,

That's great! I didn't realize that could be done so easily. I haven't tried it yet but here goes...

play hi-bitrate (mp3) (broadband)
play lo-bitrate (mp3) (dial-up)

Thanks for an easy solution. Now if everybody reads this who needs it we're in business.

Richard-

Could this post be made a "sticky" post that would remain at the top of the "Promote Your Music" forum? That way, it won't get shunted off the page.

I will be looking for this post again, I know (something about senior moments, I think)!

That's a good idea. I tagged it as an "Important" post so it will stay at the top of the new messages in the forums for a week anytime there is a reply and will always stay at the top of the "Promote Your Music" forum.

Tony - great!! You know that for me, the easier, the better, right? :)

Thanks Richard for making it something we'll be able to access easily because, as easy as it is, I'm sure I'll forget when it comes to it!

You really are good with this computer stuff, Tony.

Thanks again!
Amy

Thanks Tony.  It's a Great Tip.  It didn't work in Opera, but it works fine in Firefox.

The Future Ain't What it Used to Be

  play hi-bitrate
  play lo-bitrate

Thanks for the feedback, all.

Sean, that's a cool song.  It's so true!

Rivals some of Loudon Wainright's best.

Tony,

I have to add my thanks as well. It's so simple that this means of copying and pasting these links went right by me and I've been struggling to know just how to do this for some time. Thanks for the heads up on how.

I was wondering if this might work the same for a link to a video. So, I tried to copy and paste a link to my video onto my html page of another site but no luck. I guess there's a special html language for that. It looks as though I am limited as to where this technique will work. Will this copy and paste option only work within this site?

If I can use it in an email, why doesn't it also work for placing on another web page or site?

I'm beginning to see the light.

Reg

This technique should work for any composer that has full WYSIWYG editing.

If your composer has HTML only, then you will have to do it the hard way, by entering the code.

I hadn't tested the technique with video, but I assumed it would work, as it should with any type of link.  I've just tested it with this video:

  Watch Video

from  Chris Pearline's ezFolk Page, and it works just fine.

I'm not sure what happened that yours didn't work.

Are you certain that you selected the whole link before copying?  Make sure that you select all the way from beginning to end, including any icon, and to the end of the line, beyond the last character.

If your composer has WYSIWYG editing, it should work.

Hope this helps.

Reggie,

If what Tony says won't work for you, you still should be able to deep link to the video if you want to post it somewhere else.

Just go to the page where your video is and put your cursor over "stream this video" and right click it, then choose "Copy Shortcut" from the pop-up menu. That will copy it to your clipboard. Then do a CTRL-V to paste it in an email or another site or whatever and it will look like this...

http://ezfolk.com/audio/play.php?mode=video&band_id=143&video_id=57

Not too pretty but it should play okay.

I found that to be true when I tested it the other night with the Blogger interface. I did an entry about how my latest song had gone up to number two on the daily charts and copy/pasted both the links to my song and the links to the number one song (John R's "Public Education").

It works the other direction too as you can click below to go the that blog entry to see the results. This WYSIWYG editor has some issues though. Like, the copy/paste thing is the only way I've found to make links that don't consist of just the URL (i.e. the kind where the link says something besides the URL doesn't seem to be possible here).

Also, once you've pasted one of those links it seems to be impossible to get back to regular typing. You sort of have to type your stuff on both sides of the link then paste the link between them.

Which is what I did here.

HH

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

In this instance, I have pasted the link, first,

play hi-bitrate
play lo-bitrate

And then typed around it with no problems.

In this next instance, I have selected, copied and pasted a sequence consisting of plain text, plus an animation, an image, and and text linked to the ezFolk PD  Library.

Visit the

Public Domain Library

Is this what you mean by "where the link says something besides the URL"?

Or did you mean that in WYSIWYG you can't enter the HTML that will produce a clickable link on text you enter?  for example:

Snoupi's Saloon (my blog),

which I produced here by entering this code:

Am I missing something?

The composer on Bloggerbot does have some quirks, for example, it automatically resizes images whether they need it or not.  In those instances, I prefer to use the HTML option, and enter the code myself.  More work, but also more flexibility.  You can compose in Bloggerbot by switching back and forth between HTML and WYSIWYG, according to need.

Likewise, you can't enter code in most e-mail programs, to my knowledge, but you can copy-and-paste just about anything.  If the program picks up and applies to ensuing text the bold, underline, colour, or other formatting that has been applied to the link , it's easy enough, in my experience, to go to the composer control panel and deselect the formatting, as long as you have gone past the end of the link, before typing, and aren't accidentally typing into the link.

Does any of this help?

Tony,

I just spent a bunch of time responding to your post and trying to experiment with your suggestions.

When I hit preview to make sure that it all came out right it hosed up my entire post.

This interface is a nice enough idea but it's not well-written nor does it have any help to figure out this stuff on your own.

Basically I put up with it because I like these forums and it's the only way to post here.

HH

I'm still not sure I understand.  I'm a relative newbie to computers and the internet.

I do know that some forums allow you to choose plain text, HTML, or WYSIG editing, and you can even jump back and forth in composing a post as needed.  It would be nice to have the option here.

I get along with this interface OK, but I do get frustrated that every carriage return is a <p> (double space), and I can't defeat it by typing <br>(single space carriage return) instead of using the carriage return, as I can in HTML.

Still, I find the ability to copy and paste song links two at a time, and have it look nice to boot, very convenient.

I think you can beat that with a shift-CR.
Yep. Just like that.

Funny thing though, on my machine a single CR will do that as well.
Like that. I have to double-CR to get the paragraph break.

As I said, not well-coded.

Doesn't seem to work for a different site.  Works if I post back here with such a technique, but when I try to get to another site it just takes the "Play bitrate..."

Copy Shortcut works, but of course, you need to copy each Mp3 as a seperate link and post them.

It should work for any site that uses a WYSIWYG editor.

Otherwise 'Copy Shortcut' is the way to go.

If your editor has an 'Insert Link' function you can type your text, (e.g. 'Play Hi Bitrate',) select your text, click the 'Insert Link', (sometimes called 'Hyperlink',) button, (on this editor it's this button: ,) and paste the shortcut into the box provided.  Your link will look like this:

Play Hi Bitrate
