Alright, I got some sound files from one of the Circle participants (thanks, Paul), and want to upload them to my music page.

The files are in WMA format, and neither GarageBand nor Audacity will allow me to convert them to WAV files so I can turn them into MP3 files.

Any free software out there for Macs that will do this for me? Please note the operative word, here, free!

Thanks, Brad

EDIT:  Try these:

Brad:  GOOGLE use the ADVANCED feature in the first search line: CONVERT WMA TO WAV, MP3, and in the must contain line: CONVERT WMA.  You will find a couple of pages of links.  The two above are FREE, but may be limited in time of use or some other function.

The following is not quite true.  I posted the following, then found the above.

WMA files are proprietory MICROSOFT.  They are locked and encrypted.

The way around this is to Play them with the MS media player.  Then use your computer sound board recorder to re-record them in standard wave.

I don't know what all you have on your Mac.

As a last resort.  Play the file.  Use the LINE or AUX out (or headphone out) and record it on one of your devices (Tape deck, Tascam studio, whatever).

Then play it back into the system Linein/Auxin and record it in whatever format your Mac permits.  If you are using Audacity or some other such, you can record it with that.

But, as far as I know, WMA can't be converted from the raw with a Mac or a PC.

On my system I can play them and record them at the same time, then save in any format I want. WAV. WMA, MP3, PCM for example, even in Sony ATRAC (2 formats).

" GOOGLE use the ADVANCED feature"

I guess I really need to start thinking of that Goggle thing, but it reminds me too much of infinite mathmatics, so I tend to forget it's a search engine.

Thanks, Dusty, I was considering burning a CD, then recording it back into Audacity as a last ditch choice. As usual, you're 2 steps ahead of me!

(Some links to music on the Circle page now.)

Brad, I don't have personal experience of this, but some people who use Apples reccommend it.

Gerry-

Yeah, I found that one from Dusty's link. It looks really promising, when I can come up with the $10 to buy the full version. The Demo will only convert to MP3 and only 15 seconds worth, so it isn't of use right now.
The guy who had the files posted them on his site and I linked to them from the Circle page, so there are 6 tracks there now.
