Hi

I am messing around with acid pro. I used the mic from a headset just to see if it works and now I need to get a better mic.

I went down to the local shop, where I was treated with distain and disgust as I always seem to be when visiting music shops.

But apparantly I need a mic and a pre amp. But I was then told it depends on your sound card....

So - er...can anyone explain more? Is it possible to just put a mic into your PC and record that way?

"Is it possible to just put a mic into your PC and record that way?"

That's what I do. I use an inexpensive Radio Shack mic plugged into an iMic USB adapter (I also used the same mike on my PC, but I got smart and switched to an iMac finally). For most recording, something along that line will work fine. You might want to check a computer store for a stereo mic, or, what I have started using recently is to record into my Olympus WS-33M Digital Voice Recorder (set to stereo), and then moving the WMV files to the computer, converting them to WAV files with "easyWMA," then processing through Audacity.

Now, if you're wanting professional-level stuff, I can't help.

Thanks...That's all I needed to know.

I'm not looking to record my stuff for the world to listen to...just something I can have for myself and any future music projects I might do.

If it works out and that then I can think about getting some serious equipment.

Thanks!

What's this audacity like?

Give it a try - it's a free recording program. Not too difficult to use, and a pretty good tutorial and user guide come with it.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

thanks.

I got it downloaded and will check it out when I can.

Seems a simpler system than acid pro.

Be sure to download the plugins.  You will definetely need LAME to do MP3 conversions.

There are a bunch of others available also.  Check the site info for other links to equalizers, compressors, and other useful plugins.

The Tutorial has a WAV file you also need to follow it as it walks you through the program.

One more thing:  Unless your computer is super quiet, as is the area in which you use it, your microphone can pickup ambient noises.  If you are not careful you'll get the noise from cars passing in the street, the TV in the next room and so on.

Most of these are very difficult to filter out, even with a PRO program.

Thanks....

My room is dead quiet. I live in Finland at the mo' and we use triple glazing cos of the winter. So there is no noise from outside.

And everyhting in the house can be controlled (pretty much).

Do you have a link for LAME?

Thanks again

There should be a link from the Audacity page, as I recall.

Ok -

Now I bought a mic and used adacity (spelling) and acid pro...but it seems like the recording is very quite.

Any tips on making the sound louder. I think it's something with my PC set up not the software.

Audacity has a VOLUME adjustment in it for adjusting the recorded track volumes.  Look at all the tools in the header bar menus. It also has a INPUT record volume control.

I haven't used Aud for a while, but it may be a simple sliderbar on one side of the working screen(s) where you see the tracks, or it may be in the menus.

The other area to check is the Sound card settings.  Some of them have Input volume (record) volume controls.

If you can't solve it that way, then you might need a pre-amp for the mike.  DON'T USE THE LINEIN/AUX for the mic.  The mic feed level is too low.

If you are using the MIC input with a NON-COMPUTER (IE good quality mic) you need a Pre-Amp.

A cassette recorder will work. Use the recorder in PAUSE/RECORD plug the mic in and use the LINEOUT or the HEADPHONE OUT from the recorder to the LINEIN on the computer.

Then adjust the Volume.  If you use the HEADPHONE out, you have two volume controls.  One on the Cassette, and the input on the computer.  If you use the LINEOUT on the Cassette, then all volumes must be set in the computer.

AUDACITY does have an INPUT volume control.  If you are too weak, then crank it all the way to MAX VOLUME, and then back down as, or if, needed.

Hi there :)

I can't claim that it is complete, and doesn't need some revision, but this blog I wrote on acoustic recording might help you -

I've experimented with Audacity and Acid and find that Acid is a more complete and versatile program. Albeit, not a particularly easy or intuitive program. If you are having input level problems that don'y go away no matter what you try, you might need a microphone preamp.

My previous computer accepted a microphone with no problems. My current one does not. DIfferent sound cards.  Cost in US dollars for a mic preamp is in the $100 range. eBay might you some options.

If you have stereo equipment (who doesn't) try running the mic signal through the stereo, then into the computer. I do that. My old cassette preamp works fine for me in this function.

I've recently added an external sound card (Sound Blaster) which has mic and line inputs as well as several output functions. It does the job as well, for about the same price. It is possible to run a line out into a mic or line input allowing me to record soundfrom one program, pod cast or recording to a recording program. Or add more tracks to a completed recording.

After a lot of eperimentation I generally prefer Adobe Audition. It is as simple as Audacity for basic recording, but much more capable of more advanced recording and effects, including multi-tracking. You can download a trial version. But it is a bit expensive.
