Hi all - couldn't think of a better group of folks to ask this question to. Last night I had the good fortune to have my gig recorded by the sound engineer. There are some good takes on there that I'd like to use, but she edited it oddly - the intros to songs are at the end of the previous song instead of at the beginning of the song. Is there a way to edit mp3s? Cut, paste, that type of thing? All I have is the CD of the set - no original files. Thanks in advance my friends! Amy

AmyDK wrote: Hi all - Amy: It is technically possible to "cut and paste" the intros back in the correct order, using consumer level audio editing software. I could do it with a combination of Cakewalk Pyro and Audio Cleaning Lab. It would be best to use the CD of the set and use audio software to convert ("rip" is the technical jargon) the defective song(s) to .WAV file(s). You will want to do the editing in an uncompressed (.WAV on a Windows PC) format, rather than the lower audio quality MP3 format. Using a WAV editor, the defective song would show a graphical display of a waveform, allowing you to identify where the intro begins. Then, you use your mouse to click the "start" and "stop" points of where you want to "cut" the song. Depending upon the capabilities of your WAV editor or other audio software, the intro can be placed in front of the song and the two can be electronically "stitched" back together in seamless fashion. Hi Amy, If you have a (fairly recent) Mac, you can use 'GarageBand' (which comes with the computer) in the way Will suggested (except it won't use .wav files but some comparable format). 'Audacity' is a free software that can be used on Mac, PC and other platforms. I would guess that many members here use this software to prepare their MP3's for uploading to EZFolk. As you surmise, it should be pretty much a case of cut and paste. Here are some links: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audacity I'm sure others here will have their favourite software for this sort of thing. Hi Amy - I'm a Mac user and Garageband is a great piece of software for my purposes - I use Audacity also, which is actually really powerful and easy to use - if you decide to use give it a try you might find the tutorial links below useful - happy editing! http://www.edhsonline.org/other/audacity/ http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Tutorials

Thanks you guys - I knew that I could count on folks here to help me out. Garageband is working out really well for the general editing. I'm thinking Audacity might help me out with some more of the fine tuning (can't do that in Garage Band, can you?). This part of it is actually fun (my inner computer geek wanting to come out! I appreciate all the expertise on this site! Thanks again - Amy

Disclaimer: I've barely used GarageBand. It seems to me you could do quite a lot with Garageband (GB). In particular, you ought to be able to take the tracks from the CD and mix them with new (more) audio tracks, if you want. The particular power of GB would seem to be in mixing in synthesized parts e.g. a drum track. Your music isn't like that (yet?) so that's probably not of interest. Personally, I find Audacity a bit easier to come to terms with; it seems more powerful. You can apply effects (for the style of what I play, I wouldn't want to - perhaps you neither, it depends on the music) and the interface seems a bit more versatile. To make an MP3 you need the 'LAME' library (but there is information on that on the Audacity web site). Maybe Audacity just seems better because I'm more familiar with it.
