Brad,

Unless you're:
  1. Recording on your laptop and...
  2. Using something besides Audacity to do so...
...it sounds like it's time for you to switch to Ubuntu Linux.

XP is the second worst Windoze since 3.0. (The "honor" of worst-ever goes to Windoze ME.)

As far as not hitting the touchpad... plug an actual mouse into your laptop. That's what I do. On some laptops you need to go into the CMOS settings and make sure it's set up to disable the touchpad when a real mouse is plugged in. You access the CMOS settings while in the "P.O.S.T." (Power On Self Test) phase of booting up. Somethere on your screen it'll say "Hit Del (or some other key) to change settings."

I don't own one (yet!) but they make wonderful small mice for laptops, often the "optical" (aka "laser")  type which don't even require a mousepad.

Getting back on topic...

Richard, I'm happy to stay with Cobalt until the theme writers catch up with the new version of Jamroom. I really appreciate being able to host my mp3s here and, as soon as I get to that point, being able to sell mp3s "like the big boys" at iTunes and other sites without all the attendent hassles.

Plus, the fact that selling through ezFolk helps support ezFolk tickles me no end.

Keep up the great work!

Hobbit, you shame me. I'm sorry if I sounded grumpy. If something new is in the works, of course I can live with what's here until it's ready.  This site has been very good to me.

John... I agree with you that I don't like the way the Cobalt theme looks either. I do prefer the look of the Apple theme that we used to use, but as the script has evolved the Apple theme not only got left behind in not having the new features, but the old features don't work right in the Apple theme anymore either. The ratings, contacts, and that type of thing don't work anymore. There was never a video option with the Apple theme, and new things like the Fans and Digital Vault aren't in there at all.

As Howlin' Hobbitt correctly stated (thanks HH), the theme writers are behind on the Jamroom capabilities so the only decent theme at present is Cobalt, despite many of us (including me) preferring a different look, specifically dark letters on a light colored background. Cobalt is the only built-in skin and theme and is the only one that stays current.

So anyhoo, I hope everybody will just bear with me until we get a better look. There is talk of artists (and members) being allowed to design their own pages similar to MySpace or at least be able to choose their own colors and fonts. That's something I think we can look forward to at some time in 2007.

:hat:

Jeez, that wasn't my intent!

Richard -- I got to thinking about it and was pretty positive that the colors in Cobalt (which seem to be the biggest objection) were being set in a .css file. So I looked at the code for a page and, sure enough, there's a link to "Cobalt.css" in there. I pasted the link into my address bar and boom, I'm looking at the code.

The upshot? If you copy all of the files from the cobalt theme to a new sub-folder (I'm assuming all the themes live in their own subfolder), rename them all something else (like everywhere a filename says "cobalt" change that to... I dunno... paleface or something).

Now... you go in and start changing colors in the css file, one at a time and checking the results on some test account. As soon as things look right you "release" paleface (or whatever) and you've got all the functionality of cobalt without the darksome color scheme. I can't experiment with this myself but I'll bet that's one way around the difficulty. And it'd save a bundle for you... holy smokes! $199 for the theme package?

I notice that there's a "Jamroom Theme Engine" as part of the package. You might be able to do all of that stuff without having to manually edit the css file, but since I don't know details about the "theme engine" this is just a SWAG.

Just a suggestion from an incurable geek.

HH

Well, only because you're being nice and helpful and I was whining and complaining. And your elegant kluge (if I may call it that) sounds like the proverbial cat's pyjamas (a good thing). It's not so much the format of Cobalt, it's mostly the colour scheme. Offering a variety of formats (simple, elaborate; with and without various features) sounds complicated, a real programmer's job, and still not everyone would be perfectly happy. But offering some choice in colour schemes would keep all the sites from looking the same, and we could have the fun of tiddling around a little bit.

HH-

Yeah, I'm seriously considering Redhat Linux (I think I've said that before, here), but, I am using the laptop for everything - recording via n-Track, keeping my financial records, tax records (Quicken - TurboTax (TurboTax is the reason I upgraded OS's in the first place, it won't run on 98se anymore), keep utility records, etc. I may keep the old computer in the garage for recording sessions until I get a good portable unit.

I am looking at getting a docking station, since the portablility is not a real concern, the main use of that function will be to take it to the patio to record.

I really miss everything I had on the old system, though. Quick Basic was a great help, and I had some really challenging text-games that only ran on DOS - plus, of course, the famous 'Doom'. I will have to see if I can find that still out there somewhere.

I've lost more than I've gained by upgrading - PL/I compiler, Power-C compiler, FoxBase, dBase III and so much more!

Oh well, as time and tides change, I become more and more an anacronistic curmudgeon. I just hope they don't do away with acoustic instruments!!!!!!

ok, I know I'm a late comer in this discussion but I've been having a nervous breakdown and haven't had the inclination to try to update my EZ folk page for a while.

Now I find I can't read it at all. the dark pop ups are all but illegible to my poor ancient eyes. Is there any way I can change the background colour? Increase the font size?

help an old biddy?

jen:shock:

jives-

Richard had to make a choice awhile back, and the Cobalt is what won, due to the fact that all the options worked on it. Here's what he said earlier in this thread:

"

I do prefer the look of the Apple theme that we used to use, but as the script has evolved the Apple theme not only got left behind in not having the new features, but the old features don't work right in the Apple theme anymore either. Sorry, and maybe Richard will update what's happening here soon.

Brad

Hey Jives & Brad,

While Brad was typing his note I was in the process of getting the Umber Alert theme back up and running, so if it helps out, go ahead and switch to that theme.

It's still the same as before -- not updated yet -- but most things work I think.

* I think * there is an Umber Alert "skin" coming soon that will give the whole MP3 section that look and the artist theme should be updated along with that. At least that's what I'm hoping for. Until then, feel free to use the Umber Alert theme.

When a new "light" theme does become available I will probably be switching all of the Umber Alert users over to it so don't get too fancy with it or put a lot of time into designing around it. I don't like changing things like that but if I just make an announcement or send an email then very few people will make the change.

:tip-hat2:

I think I'll stick with Cobalt until the new skins come in. Umber doesn't have the fans section and such.

But that's ok because, as a result of going to the control panel to check this stuff out, I finally got around to putting images on all my songs instead of the default one. Been meaning to do that for some time. :)

BTW... shouldn't the "sell" section actually be the "buy" section? Seems that someone visiting my site to check out my music would want to buy rather than sell. But maybe I'm just up too late!

I think sticking with Cobalt is a good idea if at all possible. Not only are there features missing in the Umber Alert theme, but it's now an older theme that might not work correctly in some areas. I'd definitely recommend to anyone trying it to be sure and check out their page and see how everything works after switching. It's easy to switch back to Cobalt then if you need to.

Yes, the "Sell" button should say "Buy" at the top of the page. The reason it says "Sell" is to encourage artists to set it up the MusicBlaster box from BlastMyMusic, which is now integrated on all artist sites. If you click on the "Sell" button there is a link to BlastMyMusic, where you can go and set up individual MP3s you would like to sell. It will generate a box that you can plug into ezFolk or MySpace or your own personal website.

Once you set what you would like to sell on the BlastMyMusic site you come back to ezFolk and go into your control panel and click on "Sell Your Music" on the menu near the bottom of the left side. Just enter your BlastMyMusic number and the button turns into "Buy" and it's set up for you.

Oho! Good job!

If I get through today's tribulation (long story, very sad) I'll have to spend part of this week finishing off some of my projected "to sell" stuff.

Thanks, Richard.
