Here is a site I ran across that has a lot of great info that relates to this new forum.

http://bluegrassmessengers.com/fiddle.html

They run through a huge list of songs and tell about the history, other names that the song is known by, musicians that have performed the song, and the lyrics.  Really neat site packed with info.  I had no idea that so many old time songs overlap and intertwine with each other.  Not only the tune buy lyrics as well.  The intro to the site actually talks about that a little.  Enjoy!:wave1:

Thanks for the link uncburr. So much for wondering about song histories huh? Looks like he's got it all covered.

Somehow while I was checking out that site I ended up on another one that was really good. It's the Henry Reed collection of fiddle tunes on the Library of Congress website. A couple hundred recordings and lots of info on the tunes. Here's a link...

Oops... I just found out how I got to the Henry Reed site... GreasyStrings posted it already in another message.

Please excuse the faux pas... I'm gettin' a little senile.

Nice site.

When I was living up north (200 miles north of Edmonton) on a Cree Reservation where my husband was teaching, the had a kind of country hoedown and the Cree ladies and gents were dancing to something call a "Schottische".

Now it sounded kind of like a cross between a polka and a waltz and was pretty fast.

Can anybody here define what I "Schottische" is .
I figured it was French Canadian but I guess I'm wrong.

Hi Sonia,

The Schottische is a partnered country dance, Bohemian in origin.

If you're interested in some information about it click the following link...

Here's one that has many tunes recorded by a fillder by the name of Jehile.  He lived in the Matamoras area of Pennsylvania.

You can aslo Google "Jehile" and find the site.

Peace,
Ed
