HI...

In 1954, about March or April--I don't remember as I was in the first grade at the time--I had my tonsils out and while recuperating at home listened to WBAM in Montgomery, AL.  One of the songs they were playing stuck in my mind and, I've discovered, is probably my favorite song....Wildwood Flower.

I have been trying to find out which version and by whom they were playing.  It isn't listed in their song sheets for that year, such as they are.  It was probably a filler or a request but they played it quite often.

Duane Eddy has a very good rendition and it sounds really close to what I remember but he didn't record his until the late fifties.  Hank Thompson has a swing version but it doesn't sound right.  I'm sure there were others that I haven't found yet.

If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.  The song is a nice memory of when I was living in Bolling, AL (Butler County).

Hi Ron,

I'm pretty sure everybody who could play a guitar and was at least a  little bit country played Wildwood Flower in 1954. They still do. The Carter Family might have had the first recording of it but I'm not sure.

:hat:

Hi Ron,

Try looking for Grand Pa Jones, as I had a old tape at one time that he sang it and I alway liked his music.    May not be what your looking for but its a long shot.

    Good luck,   Charlie

Ron-
You could also look for the Weavers, and/or the SkilletLickers. I think they were both fairly popular groups around then. Burl Ives would have been active then, also.

Good luck, you should find lots of recordings.

Brad

(Of course, my money would be on the Carter Family.)

Thanks Guys...

The version I'm looking for was all instrumental, which narrows the field a little--but not much!!  Gracenote.com has a HUGE list that I'm trying to work through, some are vocals, some banjo, some dulcimer, some are (rather bad) guitar renditions, some are....I don't know.  Just finding them is a real challenge.

Merle Travis may be a possibility as may some others I saw, I'll just keep on keeping on...

Again, thanks

RWS

btw:  Though I appreciate their place in history and their achievments I really don't enjoy the Carters......but that's just me being ornery, I suppose.   (Don't much like Bart either!!!)

Hi Singing queen,

Thanks for the info, I've heard their rendition and it's not the one I'm looking for.
