Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me with this. I've searched around to find information about Clinch Mountain Backstep and according to old-time fiddle player Henry Reed ('Fiddle tunes of the old frontier') the fiddle tune 'Breakdown in A' is relly old. He and his son Gene Reed recorded this tune in 1967, and it seems similar to Clinch Mountain backstep. But then I've seen several references to it being a Carter (Ruby Rakes) tune from 1958 or thereabout. I'd be really grateful if someone could help me out here, since I'm a little confused - is this tune really an old barn dance tune in the 'older than the hills' category, or is it much more recent? I did a recording of a bluegrass version of the tune last weekend but I won't post it until I know it's safe (and my skills in cruising the internet are not really that great:().

All the best,

Petter

Hi Petter,

I'm not completely sure about it but my guess is that Ralph Stanley added a few variations to a traditional fiddle tune and called it the Clinch Mountain Backstep. Sounds a little like Old Joe Clark to me, or something familiar at least. I'd say go ahead an upload it to ezFolk. I don't think there's a problem with it being under copyright but if somebody lets us know for sure that it is we can always remove it later.

Thanks, Richard!  I had tried to find out about the public domain status via the net but was overwhelmed with all the (conflicting) information. I'll certainly upload it now.

Have a great Easter!

Petter
