Hello, All

I have never found any traditional children's music resources on the web, but to be fair, I haven't really searched that topic. All of my songs come from the books I've read over many years of teaching and singing and from my own collecting.

Here's a partial list of books:

Seeger, American Folk Songs For Children
Abernethy, Singin' Texas
Owens, Texas Folk Songs
Opie, The Singing Game
Jones & Hawes, Step It Down

I'd love to continue this thread to see what we can gather!
All the best, Jennifer Mansfield Peal

I just found this site this morning.  Some classics listed as a result of the study.

Wow! What an amazing resource. I wonder if this lady has published her work - other than the web publication of this simple page. It sounds like an amazing study.

Thanks for the great reference, JMP (Miss Jenni)

Greetings Jenni,

I know, I was amazed to find it! I emailed Dr. Ward and asked if she intended to publish the list of over 500 songs and she sent me the list in her response. I've invited her to join in this discussion here.

Wow, I got a lot of work ahead of me. As I wrote you, I know very, very little of music theory. I play by ear and have always so I need to find a recording of the airs that are associated with some of these songs. Not the classics as I'm sure I can work those out having sung them since being a child. It will however involve the heavy dusting off of those dusty old shelves in the back of me head to remember a few.  I am so looking forward to researching the stories behind some on the 500+ list as well as the airs to which they were sung.

I hope as I develop a children's program I remember which audience I am singing to and don't start singing about whiskey to a bunch of kids or worse yet singing about a fox out on the town (great song by the way, I've already started working on it) to a bunch of partying paddys in the pub. The kids will only laugh (yea their parents might be upset too) but the paddys are apt to react by giving yours truly a hidin'.

The thing I love most about life is that one never really knows which way the path will turn until one gets there. Thanks for starting this discussion, your help, and as well for coming along to ezFolk.com.

Peace,
Ed
