Sonny Terry/Brownie McGhee/John Hurt

Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem

New Lost City Ramblers & Greenbriar Boys

Judy Collins and Elizabeth Cotten

Stanley Brothers and Doc Watson

Johnny Cash and Roscoe Holcombe

All 2-hour DVDs (two shows each DVD) of Pete Seeger's "Rainbow Quest" Television programs from the 60's. The performers are icons in the genre, and of course, Pete is Pete! These are the only titles I've found, and suspect that the program may have run longer.

Highly recommended viewing. So far I've seen the Cash (Johnny & June Carter both appeared)/Roscoe Holcombe and the Stanley Brothers (with the Clinch Mountain Boys and special guest Aunt Emma - you have to see her to believe her!)/Doc Watson (with 2 other players from his region a fiddler and another guitar - I forget their names.) Discs.

Brad

EDIT: Sorry, that's "Cousin Emmy," not Aunt Emma (this old senior-moment prone brain got mixed up with "The Wizard of Oz" there)!

Carol and I are subscribed to Blockbuster online; we have found a number of great DVDs there as well. ;)

Amy-

Thanks for the list, I'll have to look for those and get some of them.

It may be heresy, but the American Experience episode on the Carter's wasn't that good, to my way of thinking. Never did hear a complete song by the Carter's, and some of the stuff was just too much "artsy" picture-making. I think the book "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?" is much better.

I should get my first DVD tomorrow and have quite a few lined up on my Queue

Never saw that one, but if it's not worth it, I'll take it off the queue. A lot of the ones I listed are those I've put on my queue but have yet to see. If you're a fan of Steve Goodman you'll enjoy that one and the Chieftains one is on my list for later this week. Can't wait! Down the Old Plank Road and Further Down the Old Plank Road are two of my favorite albums.

Just watched the Chieftians "Down the Old Plank Road" - a fun concert DVD. Great folks played at the concert: Earl Scruggs/Tim O'Brien/John Hyatt/Allison Kraus/Gillian Welch, etc., etc... PLUS the Chiefians of course. Not the most spellbinding of concerts, but if you're a fan of old time/blue grass and celtic music, it's a great combination. I'd highly recommend the CD's too - "Down the Old Plank Road" and "Further Down the Old Plank Road"

There are many such shown on the PBS network.  Being somewhat sneaky, I can TAPE them for my own replays.  And, as thier shedules do not meet mine in all instances, I do.

I have a stand-alone DVD burner that will burn a 1,2,3, or 6 hour DVD, in both single and Double sided mediums.  So I can get an entire PBS or other such (cable run) of nearly any length if I happen to be away at the time.

And, I don't have to return the material.

But, for the general public, NetFlix, and the new "order online and pickup at the store" by Blockbuster are of convenient use.

I just returned the DVD with Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee/Hedy West, Mississippi  John Hurt & a Minstrel Banjo player Whose name I don't remember.

Last night I found the only copy of Hedy West still available on the web and bought it! $20 for a once-played LP "Hard Times & Good Times." Boy, I really like her playing and singing - wish I had run across her back in the 60's!

ALRIGHT!

I got the Hedy West album the other day! "Old Times and Hard Times"

Not only is it a great selection of songs sung and played on banjo by Hedy, but it appears the jacket may be autographed, too!

"Hello at the Focus II (?), Good things are coming. Hedy West" - Question mark by me.

There is also a very tall sketch downthe side of the notes in the same ink.

Anyway, the songs are varied, from old ballads to coal-mining songs from her father, who collected them in the 30's.

I have got to find more of her  stuff!

Charlie -

Hedy is on the same program as Mississippi John Hurt.

The album was the only copy of the only album of hers I could find on the web. Vinyl, in great shape. She has a unique voice and her banjo syles range from what sounds like a 2-finger style to straight clawhammer.

I have read Guthrie's autobiography "Bound For Glory," and am not sure I want to see this film. I'll have to think about it.
