I just found out "Salty Dog" is not in the Public Domain, just in case anybody was wondering.

". . .
the Morris Brothers recorded the song that was their all time hit-"Let Me Be Your Salty Dog." The song was written by Zeke in 1935, but both brothers arranged it.. . . "

Well, I wasn't wondering about Salty Dog, but I'm certainly surprised to hear that it is that recent. There was a discussion of this song on BHO in the old-time section (I think) with a subject line something like "what do the words to some songs mean". I don't believe that this came up there.

Isn't a 'salty dog' a dog in heat?

Eric-

That's exactly where I learned this tidbit. The quote was posted there. I have been playing around with the tune some, since I got the chord sequence from BHO, also, I believe. Either there or Banjo-L. But it was under the Off-topic forum.

Phil-

Here's the link, with some interesting interpretations:

As it  happens, a large quantity of the tunes we play are not PD.  For example: "Trouble in mind", and that "old standard"  "Moonshiner" (I've been a moonshiner for seventeen long years...),  which was written in the 60's by a friend of Pete Seeger's. Because a goodly number of them have been around since "our" collective childhood, and we learned them at camp or school, or from performances, we tend to think that they are.

I have found that the safest way is to do a GOOGLE, or ALTAVISTA search by title and a line of the lyrics before putting them up.

Just my experience, not a slam at anyone.

Dusty-

My thinking exactly! I try to do  enough research before I record anything to keep myself out of trouble.
