aka "where did you sleep last night" Did Leadbelly write this - or is it a genuinely 'trad' song. I have recordings of it (under various titles) by at least 4 or 5 artists (including the mighty Rambling Jack Elliott). Any info? Dan

Here's a link for you. Leadbelly did a great rendition of it, but it's older than that. It's often played by Old Time musicians, but Nirvana did a version of it as well, so it's really stood the test of time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Did_You_Sleep_Last_Night cheers, Amy

Quote from Art Rosenbaum's book "Old Time Mountain Banjo":In the Pines is an old railroadman's lament that was known to mountain banjo pickers long before Bill Monroe brought it to a wider audience. (Incidently, I just received this book today after winning it on eBay. It is out of print, and is such a great resource that copies go for over $30 regularly in bidding. 1968 cover price is $3.95.)

The first version I heard of this was by John Prine. It was one of my favorite songs by him.

Lead Belly sang the song with at least 3 sets of lyrics. He asked the question,"Where did you sleep last night?" of "Black Girl", "Little Girl" and "My Girl". I have Art Rosenbaum's book around here someplace too and I agree that it's a good resource. More than just clawhammer tunes in this book.
