Hi I always wanted to learn an instrument and love the sound of the banjo. I honestly have never played anything in my life and this may sound daft at 40 but I would really like to learn it now. I bought a 4 string Irish tenor (cos I'm Irish!!) for christmas and now need help in choosing a book, dvd to start learning from home until i find some lessons. Can anyone please help a complete novice? I would appreciate any advice, links etc. A

Greetings and welcome to ezFolk, A good place to start is Chris Smith's site http://coyotebanjo.com/music-group-28.html Try looking up Kevin Griffin. He's a brilliant player and his CD "Across the Pond" is absolutely fantastic. Spend some time perusing the discussions listed here as well: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/index/search?name=banjo Where are you located? There may be a good tutor near you. Welcome to the journey! Peace, Ed

Good afternoon to you Ann, Jaysus, you're right in the mix. Shouldn't be hard to find a brilliant tutor. University should have some material available. I don't think it all is limited to students. If you go to http://www.thesession.org and click on the "Sessions" link to the right then the "Search" tab along the top of the new page and enter the appropriate locale info (leave the town/city info blank as no sessions are listed in Clonlara) you'll get a list of near thirty sessions. I'd recommend getting out to one or two near you. You'll surely find a player to offer some pointers this way. All the best! Get some recordings by Gerry O'Connor and by Mick Molony, both brilliant players.
