Hello -

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about JH Buckbee banjos from around 1890.. I have the opportunity to pick one up in good shape for around $300, and boy is it pretty. Since this will be my first banjo, I'm clueless as to whether it's a good deal though. I'm interested in frailing style. If anyone has any recommendations, please reply.. There's also a vintage Silvertone from the 40's for around $175 (I think I once saw a pic of Roscoe Holcomb playing one) or a Framus for about the same price.

Thanks - Kristen

Hi Kristen,

If it's your first banjo I'd be careful about being sure it's playable. I've seen some really good old banjos from the 1890s (or 1940s) but some stinkers as well. Since you are just starting to play I'd recommend that you choose an instrument that plays well over one that is more of a collectible.

Of course, either of the ones you mentioned might be very playable, but you need somebody to try it out whose opinion you trust. If you know somebody who plays who could try it out for you, that would be the best. Or if you still like the idea of vintage you might consider a place like Elderly Instruments, where the sales people are knowledgeable enough to play it and give you an honest opinion.

Maybe the best way to go though is to make your first purchase a new instrument such as the openback Gold Tone banjos (all of their openbacks are great for frailing) or the Deering Goodtime, which is also popular and plays really well.

Good luck... let us know how it goes.

:hat:

Kristen -

Check in over at Banjo-L and/or Mudcat cafe for all the info you ever wanted to know (and much, much more!) about Buckbee's! The people there are very knowledgable and outspoken about anything banjo (and more). There are historians, builders, sellers, collectors and just plain opinionated folk on either site.

:thumbs2: Keep on pickin'
Brad
