Ho there,

some of you may remember me i brought my banjo a couple of years ago then started college and didnt have time for her but now thats done and we've been reunited (aww)

However I can't read music and am not naturally musical (when i sing the pipes in the house get unclogged) i just really enjoy it, so can any one recommend a nice simple way (cos im a nice simple gal) for me to learn a few tunes to play on my banjo (jolene...yes a cliche but what the heck!) I can do the chords and a few rolls..I tend to come a wee bit unstuck when combining chords with rolls but im sure i'll get used to it.

Are there any websites that offer a tutorial, i can play along with (I do have a dvd but its a wee bit complex...like i said im simple) or even have it written down like the instrustions on the game twister, you know "right pinky bottom string 4th fret..." that kind of thing?

Any way many thanks, i hope youve all been well since my last visit

Ez

xxx

Well, I'm no expert of bluegrass style. In fact I can't really manage those rolls at all, but I can give advice anyway!

Really what you have to do at this stage is just run through changing chords while smoothing up the rolls. It's pretty hard at first but only gets easier with practice. I haven't tried the melody, but I bet Jolene has some pretty quick chord changes.

First off, have you seen the tutorials here at EZfolk? http://www.ezfolk.com/bgbanjo/

A couple of other options that I've seen are the Murphy Method, and Banjo for Dummies.

I've seen Murphy Henry at a banjo camp, and she is really fun. She was in charge of the novice bluegrass track and I heard good things about her method. She particularly doesn't teach with a heavy reliance on tab as she wants people to learn by ear. I've seen very good reviews of her beginning banjo dvd.

http://www.murphymethod.com/

Bill Evans wrote the book "Banjo for Dummies", part of that popular "* for Dummies" line of books. It's laid out in the same way, and has Bill's sense of humor coming through. It also covers (lighly) other techniques for 5-string banjo, something that is fairly rare in recent banjo books.

Cool! Well done. Frailing is fun, and easier to do as a solo or song back-up than 3-finger picking, in my opinion.

If you are in the UK and interested in frailing a group of my students have started up a forum. If you head over to http://ukfolkies.proboards107.com/index.cgi you should be able to find somebody close to you willing to help you learn the basics.

I gave some workshops in England last October, and I was really happy to see the way people in your part of the world are taking frailing banjo and putting a very English spin on things. Just the other day Colin posted an old northern england song on YouTube called Keep Your Feet Still Geodie Hinnie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj9qPza-REU

In Bristol, my good friend James is messing around with slide blues banjo, rock and roll and American folk songs like My Oklahoma Home:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgRr2n-XxCM

You have a great group of banjo pickers in your neck of the woods who are just getting to the point where they need to start sharing the basics with people. When you contact folks on the UK Folkies forum, don't be bashful. These folks have been taught from square one that teaching is part of the craft.

To give you an idea of what I mean, one of my American students just posted a workshop on Cluck Old Hen - and he has been playing for less than six months! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi_Phv_boCk

Good luck and happy picking. I hope you go on to make wonderful music.

-Patrick
