I found my brother's old banjo - not even sure what make it is. Jida? But I do know it's a bluegrass banjo (has a resonator). My question is, can someone play clawhammer banjo on a bluegrass banjo? Is that kosher? I certainly don't want to spend any money on a banjo until I find out if I like it or if I'd be any good at it.

I have no knowledge of the banjo at all (except that I like it), so I didn't even know which tutorials to start with.:D

Mark Dvorak has added some great banjo to some songs on my CD, and it's inspired me to see if I'd like to start learning it. So, where to begin? Bluegrass or clawhammer?:laugh10:

Novicely yours -
Amy DK

Hi Amy,     Yes you could play clawhammer on it and I think it would be Kosher as it may have a little different sound to it,   Some banjo's you can remove the resinator and it may have a different tone ring that gives it a ringing sound other than a clawhammer banjo would sound like, But get with it.

Richard has good info about the clawhammer tuning and tunes right here on site and he will sure give you help also,   I have never been able to get the bump-ditty sound on my instruments like they do, but I have my own sound I guess.

Good luck and let us hear how it goes.

Charlie

Buahahahahaha!

Gonna get another one, gonna get another one!

Welcome to the banjo, Amy! I knew you'd wind up playing one, just like Gerry (at least you went 5-string, but then he wants to do Irish)!!!

Give Richard's CH tutorials a try for a start, and if you want more I can recommend several book/cd/dvd methods for you.

:2bigthumb: Looking forward to hearing something from you.

Brad

Thanks Charlie - I'll do that.

Brad - knew I'd hear from you. Not sure I've succumbed to the dark side yet, but I'm exploring it :)

I'll check out the tutorials when I have the chance.

thanks friends :)

Amy
