I am new to the 5 string banjo, starting in September 2007.  I am taking lessons, but my most recent song, "Worried Man" requires a hammer on C Chord.  Index finger 2nd string 1st fret, middle finger hammer on 4th string 2nd fret, and ring finger on 1st string 2nd fret.

I am having a lot of difficulty with this without pausing between measures.  I have been working on this for about 3 weeks.  While it is getting better, I am still having a lot of difficultly.

Is this typical?  Is there anyone who has experienced this difficulty and has found a solid way to become proficient?

I am really enjoying the banjo!

First question: Are you playing Scruggs style or Clawhammer?

If you're playing Clawhammer, the easiest thing is to just hammer-on the required note, not the whole chord.

If you're playing that other stuff that people tend to call banjo playing ;), then you just need to keep practicing. It can take time, just like learning to form a chord and then change to another one, but it wan be done.

You can hear my take on the song (clawhammer) here:

No matter what style you're playing you wouldn't do a hammer-on of the whole chord. The hammer-on would just be on one note, so if you're doing a hammer-on of the 4th string 2nd fret, for example, hold the other strings of the C chord down and do the hammer-on on that one note... should make things a little easier.

Yes, that is correct.  The hammer-on is on the 4th string 2nd fret.  Is it improper to place the other fingers first, then hammer the 4th string.  My teacher seemed to think it would be better if I placed all of my fingers at once.

I just don't want to create a bad habit if I can avoid it.

Thanks!
