HI folks,

It looks like santa's bringing me a banjo for Christmas.

Thanks to this site, my ukulele, and some patient friends, I can kinda almost play clawhammer style, so I was planning to go the folk music route with the new banjo.

However I'm curious to know how clawhammer works out with pop music?

Can anybody point to some samples or share their opinions on the subject?

Hi wannauke,

A lot of pop songs will work out fine in clawhammer style (both banjo and uke) but you won't find much, if anything, as far as tablature goes. You would need to learn how to play then apply the techniques to the music yourself. That should be the ultimate goal of anybody really -- to apply techniques (clawhammer or anything else) to the music you want to play, and do your own arrangements.

Pop music is fundamentally no different than any other type of music. Songs that are in 4/4 time are especially adaptable to the clawhammer style. Of course, when you play them clawhammer style they won't sound like they do on a record with completely different instruments, but that's okay too -- you want it to sound like you, not somebody else.
