Hi there,

I am the beginner of beginners and am having trouble with tuning my banjo, I was given a chromatic tuner to help with the tuning, but am unsure how to use it!  It states that it is a chromatic, guitar, mandolin and violin tuner, can I use it for the banjo?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Lorrihill,

The chromatic tuner is just what you need to tune the banjo. I'm assuming you've got a 5-string banjo (let me know if not, because then you would tune differently).

Check out the banjo tuning page on ezFolk. Here's a link:

http://www.ezfolk.com/banjo/Tutorials/G_Tuning/g_tuning.html

Scroll down the page a little bit and there are some tuning tips. Be sure to read those. Then click on the "PLAY MIDI" button and listen to the way the strings should sound. Then start with the 1st string and get it pretty close. You don't have to be right on it the first time. Get kind of close then go back and fine tune everything after you've got all of the strings pretty close to normal.

Once you get it tuned up right it'll probably stay pretty close, but be sure to check it every time you begin to play and anytime it sounds off while you're playing.

If you're still having trouble you might try taking it to somebody who plays the guitar or to a music store (along with the tuner) and they can show you how it's done. It's very simple once you get the hang of it.

Let me know how it goes or if you run into problems.
