Well, what started as a simple quest to find some good music for my videos has lead to a another mysterious force ....drawing me nearer to the B..B..B zone. Banjo that is.

Keep in mind my previous experience was buying a cd at the local store, I did buy a ukulele and have been playing with it for the last couple days. I love it.

Interestingly enough I found i can manage to play some of Richard's finger picking and claw hammer tutorials on my uku, ok well kind of. I would have never guessed this, but I have found I really like claw hammer and finger picking.

So not leaving well enough alone, I am thinking about getting a banjo too. What the heck, let's not try to learn how to play one instrument, let's try two at the same time.

Anyway, the one i am looking at is the Deering Goodtime for sale on the ezfolk site for around $339. It's a bit of a budget stretch, but I think I can swing it.

But what if I went with:

Epiphone MB-200 Banjo  around $ 250

Epiphone MB-100 First Pick Banjo aroung $ 150

Rogue Travel / Starter Banjo  aroung $ 130

or is there something else I sould look at? ( That Deering is a sweet looking  banjo though)

Instead of the Deering. Would any of these work as a beginner banjo or would I be better off biting the bullet and getting what I really want? It is a $ 100 or $ 200 swing for a couple of them

Thanks

Tinpan

Hey Tinpan,

Any of those would be a good choice. If you're gonna be carrying it out in the field maybe one of the travel banjos would be best. Any of the Gold Tone travel banjos are excellent choices (I really like the Gold Tones), but any others you mentioned would be fine too. You might just go by what looks best to you.

Learning the banjo at the same time as the uke shouldn't be too bad. There are a lot of things in common so they kind of complement each other as you learn. I started banjo not too long after the guitar and learning the banjo helped me with the guitar... gives you a better understanding.

Good luck
