you don't say what instrument you have. A lot of starter banjos have friction 5th string pegs, and the usual problem is that they are hard to tune and don't hold their setting after being played for a while

Are you saying that the 5th string doesn't stay in tune? Or has there the development of a "buzz" or some other extra sound?

If it doesn't stay in tune, there may be a little screw on the tuning peg that needs to be tightened.

If it is buzz, then you need to hunt down the source. Here are some sites that discuss string buzz, mostly on guitar but a few on banjo:

http://www.frets.com/FRETSpages/Luthier/Technique/Setup/BuzzDiagnosis/buzzlist.html

http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/buzzing.htm

http://www.folkofthewood.com/page4821.htm

http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=103023

I've had this on the 5th string before, and in my case I had to cut a little more in the notch on the bridge, making sure that the notch is higher on the side away from the tailpiece. But, buzz can come from a wide variety of sources so it's hard to diagnose remotely.

Good luck with your search

Wilderbeast,

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to here but sometimes when I have played for a long time I get almost an "echoey-squeek-ping". It is caused by the build up of dirt / oils etc from playing. I have found two ways to combat this .. firstly (and obviously, clean the strings, I use either fast fret or lem-oil) and secondly (don't ask why I thought this would work but it does) I also keep a small pencil eraser handy and just wipe it over the part of the string where my thumb hits (It seems to work?).

Could it be this is what you are experiencing?
