Hi All: Only had Banjo around 3 weeks, broke a string. What a new adventure. Wasn't vert smart I didn't have another set. I went and bought 1 set thinking this will do it , well I decided to put all new string on except the 5th string, Broke two strings one at the Nut the other at the loop. Long story short it only took around 5 hours running back and forth to the music shop. Do you recommend any paticular brand. Also do you get light wgt or med. wgt? Martin is brand I bought. Still Having Fun With The Banjo Heydaye

(I want to emphasize that I don't play a 5-string banjo, I play a shorter scale 4-string tenor banjo (19 frets to the neck instead of 22). Did you break the strings while re-stringing the banjo or later while playing the banjo? If your string broke while you were bringing it back up to pitch, that can be caused by winding it too fast on the tuning peg. If broken strings are a recurring problem, buy several sets of banjo strings; they're not very expensive I prefer medium weight strings, because light weight strings sometimes cause a buzz on a short scale instrument. Try buying sets of different gauges to see which ones you like better.

Are you tuning to G tuning as ( gDGBD ). I have not had any trouble with that except trying other tunings I have broke a few. I use ( ghs Med ) strings and have even tried the light strings, but like the medium the best. Just be sure as Will pointed out not to wind them and get a kink at the nut end. Hope you have good luck with it. Charlie

Wil: Thanks for the reply, I'm tuning in G tuning. My problem was, I was turning the peg for 3 rd string and wanted to change 4th string to a C and like a dummy kept turning wondering in my mind why wasn't it changing and it broke. What I wanted to do was try dbl C tuning, which I have done now. Once again thanks. When I tried putting the new strings on the loop broke on one string and the other broke at the nut, I don't think there were any kinks. The music store replaced the strings. Thanks Heydaye
