My question: When accompanying a song that someone else is taking the lead on or someone is singing on I guess I just play the chords. My question is what kind of pattern is effective? I can play the bum ditty in the chords, but what so I do so it does not sound boring or repetitive? Alternate strings between brushstrokes and thumb stroke, more brush strokes in the measure? Please give advice.

Preston I would just do the brush chords with what ever key that it is being played or sang in such as Key of G = G C D7 Key of C= C F G7 Or what ever key they are playing in Do you have a copy of the circle of 5th's and under stand it, I think maybe I have seen one here somewhere, and that will help you as what chords to play. some one help us out here Charlie

Preston, You can do the bum ditty and just play the chord progression. You can alternate the "bum" on different strings and you can add in hammer-ons and things like that, but keep in mind you don't want to get in the way of whatever is taking the lead, so boring and repetitive isn't all that bad.

If I can't work out anything else, I use the head as percussion. Sometimes by damping the strings and bum-dittying or otherwise strumming, sometimes by rapping with my fingers on the head. Best to do it lightly, rather than trying for a "dynamite drum solo".
