My wife gave me $350 for Christmas to buy a banjo. I am looking at the Deering Goodtime and the Goldtone CrippleCreek open backs that are in this price range.  Please help me decide. Brad and Richard and any others might give me their 2 cent's worth. (What a great Wife I have).  I only play uke at this time but have wanted to try banjo for a while.  Want to do clawhammer style.

My $0.02 worth - Yup, you've got a real peach of a wife!!!!!!!!!!!

Give her a hug and kiss for me, then go and plunk on some banjos within your $$ range. You will hear one that speaks to you - grab it.

Look at both the Goodtime and Goldtone - I like the original Goodtime with no tonering, but that's my preference.

Merry Christmas, Preston.

Brad

Go to a bunch of stores and try a lot of banjos. And if there's a music event, go there and talk to the banjo pickers. They'll tell you what various banjos are like to live with. I assume there's no experation on the money so you have time to make a decision you'll enjoy forever.

Get your wife talk to my wife?

That would also be in range for the Saga SS-10 (see http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/SS10.htm, they list at $325, which is a darn good price for a banjo with planetary pegs).  I tried the "Pony" version (SS-10P) quite some time ago and liked it.

Please let us know what you come up with in the end.  Vicarious banjo acquisition is almost as good (emphasis on almost) as actual acquisition.   Happy hunting!

Wow Preston,    You have a great wife to do that for you.  I know that what ever brand banjo you end up with,  She will hear some great music from you.

I don't like to recomend brands to people, But I had a Deering Good time a long time ago and it was great little banjo and almost bought another awhile back when I bought my Gold Tone tenor.  They do have a lot of banjo's in that price range to look at.

Keep us informed on your search

Charlie

First, congratulations, and Merry Christmas. Give your wife a big hug and kiss.

As to banjos, either of the two you mentioned are nice banjos. Like Brad, maybe even more so, I am partial to the Goodtime, but that is personal preference. You wouldn't go wrong with either. I have not played the Saga that was recommended, so can't comment there.

If possible, try playing both and find one that feels right in your hands and sounds right in your ear.

Preston: I have a Goodtime openback that I bought for $300 and a Gold Tone White Ladye that I bought for $725. Both were bought new.

I actually prefer the Deering Goodtime.
