Hi Claudia, There are a lot of good books but I'm not sure your friend will be able to find them too easily in stores, although she might. I'd recommend you contact Janet Davis Music and see if they will ship to Thailand. I haven't seen anything better than Janet books. They're all easy to understand and have good information. Definitely get "You Can Teach Yourself 5-String Banjo" then whatever other of her books you might be interested in. "Splitting the Licks" will teach you how to arrange songs, "Back-Up Banjo" will help you learn backup, and "Up The Neck" will teach you how to play up the neck. They're all great. Here's a link to her full list of books on her website, and you can email them and ask... http://www.banjostore.com/banjobks.html Oh... and of course if you've got access to the Internet you can learn plenty from ezFolk as well as other similar sites. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I can have the books sent to my friend in CA and she can bring them to me to save on shipping costs. I am going to check out Janet's website right now! Thanks again, Claudia

You don't absolutely "need" fingerpicks, but if you're trying to play bluegrass banjo you probably should use them. If you're buying from Janet Davis get a couple of the .013 Dunlop metal fingerpicks (85 cents each) on the following page... http://www.banjostore.com/finpiks.html (you might want to get 4 of them and put 2 away somewhere in case you lose the first 2) Then choose a thumbpick from the following page... http://www.banjostore.com/thmbpks.html You might want to try several different thumbpicks. I'd recommend getting 2 or 3 of the National plastic thumbpicks (95 cents each). There are 3 different sizes (large-medium-small) so one of each will ensure that one will fit (the small size is really small).
