Hi everybody

Got my first Ukulele today and wondered if there were any possibilities that someone had The Beatles' song Blackbird tabbed for ukulele.

Thanks for helping:D

Perhaps a reason you don't see a note for note arrangement of Blackbird for the uke is that the guitar arrangement uses it's 6th, 5th and 4th bass strings to define the lower harmonies we are all familiar with on this tune.

If you want to strum chords and sing the song, the tune is not that difficult.

Yep, I'm afraid it's a guitar-only song, unless you just want to strum the chords. As Gerald said, the bass strings are vital in creating the harmonic droning sound of the recording. A very fun song for guitar, and not hard at all to play, BTW.

Please consider the following:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3gd0JtAgwc&feature=related

I'd love to have the tab for what they play.

Just a side note....

in seeing what some jazz players accomplish with four-finger chord forms, I believe that, in theory, you can play almost anything on uke, mandolin, cittern, bouzuki, etc.

It may not sound identical to the original.... but by using various chord inversions, you could come up with an arrangement that would be recognizable and pleasing. I believe that's what renditions and interpretations are based on.

Somebody, please correct me if I am mistaken.

Point well made. I especially like the first version (above). What you could do is go by the tab Gerald posted, use alternate chord voicings and add melody notes, and make your own version (while using the YouTube video for hints). That's what I do with the Jumpin' Jim books. Use the chords as a basis and add melody notes and alternate chord voicings. Once you get going, you may be surprised how easily it will come to you. You'll also learn a lot about chords, and your fretboard. Some tricks as well. And, it will be YOUR version.

Good luck and have fun!

I found aGuitar Pro 5 file for Blackbird, and have come up with my own adaptation based on someone elses work.

I just more or less did a little(a LOT of) fudging around with the TAB, and have come up with something that is easily playable, yet maintains a constant drone, as per the original song.

I don't know how this will work on re-entrant tuning, as I have a Baritone Ukulele. If anyone is interested, I can forward the Guitar Pro file, and they can further adapt it for a tenor or soprano ukulele.

(corrected version uploaded)

Great job!

If you have the time and inclination, if you could post some outline of the chords you used (maybe tab them like 7775, 0313 etc) then we could figure it out from there. I didn't think Blackbird would come across well on uke, but your arrangement shined!

It's something like this (remember I dropped my g down to f):

I'll use a "T" for 10 and an "E" for 11.

0010, 0031, 0053, 0058
"Blackbird singin in the dead of night"

0565, 0578, 0787, 079T, 09T8, 0998
"take these broken wings and learn to fly"

0787, 0578, 0565, 0564
"all your life"

0053, 0232, 2001, 0010
"you were only waiting for this moment to arrive"

0565, 0053, 0232, 2001, 0010

0010, 0031, 0053, 0058
"Blackbird singin in the dead of night"

0565, 0578, 0787, 079T, 09T8, 0998
"take these sunken eyes and learn to see"

0787, 0578, 0565, 0564
"all your life"

0053, 0232, 2001, 0010
"you were only waiting for this moment to be free"

0TET, 09T8, 0786, 0565, 0343, 0565
"blackbird fly"

0TET, 09T8, 0786, 0565, 0343, 0232, 2001, 0010
"blackbird fly into the light of the dark black night"

0010, 0031, 0053, 0058
0565, 0578, 0787, 079T, 09T8, 0998
0787, 0578, 0565, 0564
0053, 0232, 2001, 0010

0TET, 09T8, 0786, 0565, 0343, 0565
"blackbird fly"

0TET, 09T8, 0786, 0565, 0343, 0232, 2001, 0010
"blackbird fly into the light of the dark black night"

0010, 0031, 0053, 0058 (slow down)

( slide down from twelfth fret) 0010, 0231, 0453, 0565, 0053, 0232, 2001, 0010

0010, 0031, 0053, 0058
"Blackbird singin in the dead of night"

0565, 0578, 0787, 079T, 09T8, 0998
"take these broken wings and learn to fly"

0787, 0578, 0565, 0564
"all your life"

0053, 0232, 2001, 0010
"you were only waiting for this moment to arrive"

0565, 0053, 0232, 2001, 0010
"you were only waiting for this moment to arrive"

0565, 0053, 0232, 2001, 0010
"you were only waiting for this moment to arrive"

I think that's right.  Let me know if any of that is confusing.

Thanks seeso!

Very cool arrangement, and it sounds right to me.

I really do appreciate your taking the time to post this, and I know many others do as well.

Even just strumming, it sounds great. Now I have a good excuse to learn some fingerstyle uke as well (I play this on guitar fingerstyle, but haven't quite gotten the knack on nylon-strung, wide-spaced ukes yet).

Thanks again,
Tom P.

No problem, Tom.  Glad someone liked it enough to want to try it out.

I should point out that the first 3 chords of the verse I tabbed are kind of wrong.  The first chord is right - 0010.  But when the next chords are played, I just let the C ring out.  I don't play it after the first strum.  If you wanted to just strum these chords and not play them fingerstyle, the chords should be amended to:

0010, 0231, 0053, 0058

or

0010, 0231, 0053, 0558

Also, if anyone's trying to figure out oniyoun's amazing version, I'm pretty sure he has a low G on his ukulele.

Ahhhhhhh... yes. When strumming, the 0558 chord doubles the F note, giving a similar "drone" that you get at the same point when playing the "stock" guitar version, and 0231 (versus 0031) does sound much better strummed as well.

Thanks for the update, seeso.
