I am considering picking up a used Tangi Pineapple Ukulele - solid Mango.  Does anybody have any experience with this brand before I trek across town to check it out?  He is asking $150 for uke and case - "excellent condition".

We bought a very tuneful new Koa soprano Tangi from MGM.  It's a wonderful instrument.  I don't know if the same can be said for every Tangi, but ours is among our favourite ukes (of a collection of over 40).

best wishes

edit:  I'd go across town to look at any solid wood uke with case for $150 and judge it on its own merits.  It's a great price, at least it would be in Canada.

The tiki king database says the Tangis are made in Hawaii.  Ours says "Tangi of Hawaii" with its traditional sound hole "burn in" (love that).  Whether it's made there or elsewhere (as rumoured), these are coming out of small production, and while for some lines that means "character" (ie roughness, poor finishes and inconsistency) our Tangi is one of our finest made and finished ukes.  I could describe it as a fat-waisted soprano, but my wife thinks it's very cute.   We can't find a single thing wrong with it and would have to replace it fast if anything should happen to it.

As for the collection, I should explain that I repair and restore them, and we have many more, in fact: ukes, banjoukes, tenor banjos, tenor guitars, and archtop guitars, electic and acoustic, old and new.   I worked my way into restoration after more than 40 years working with hand tools of all sorts and also a professional career that was way too stressful for my health (and my family"s).   We are much richer in spirit now, not material things, and are happy now with our garden, the wildlife and our friends.

Have you bought that Tangi yet?
