Considering going for a Traditional Honu Tenor for around $500 (new from Musicguymic) or making the leap to a Kamaka HF-3 (used - local) at a few hundred more.... I'm a beginner and would be buying this as my first uke and won't have any opportunity to play them first... I like the looks of both and was told by mike that the Honu sounds just as good as the Kamaka and has a better finish... I'm thinking that the Kamaka will hold it's value better, but is it worth jumping from $500 for the solid Koa Honu to $900 for a used (2008) Kamaka....are the Kamakas really all that? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated... peace... Last edited on Thu Jun 18th, 2009 06:41 pm by Tobe1971 |

This would be your choice. Kamaka, made in USA. Honu, made in Indonesia. I have no problem with either, though the Kamaka will hold it's value better down the road. The finish on the Honu is most likely polyester, the finish on the Kamaka is traditional lacquer. Poly sometimes looks better, but lacquer ages well. Both nice instruments, if the money's not an issue, Kamaka.

Thanks Neil ~ I'd pretty much made the same conclusion. I was just looking for some affirmation. Thanks for the input! I pulled the trigger and should have my Kamaka HF-3 within the next few days... Aloha!

Apology accepted. It's funny, but pretty much everywhere, even with my name to the left, spelled properly on every board, people still insist on spelling it with an 'i'. Even people I've dealt with for years online, still misspell it. I think that everyone with the exception of people named Bob or Pat are going to get their names spelled oddly from now on!!! Don't forget Sedaka and Armstrong.
