Sorry Tom, I can't offer any insight into what it is. You need to be logged into the Forum to view the pictures and I am not a member there

Bill, I didn't realize the links were specific to that forum. I just uploaded the pics to Photobucket, and posted them here.

Very odd 10 string! Looks uke-sized.

Odd indeed, but very interesting.   I would agree that it looks "uke-sized". That, and 10 stings should make it a tiple.

That headstock/tuner set up is wild. I have never seen that setup before.

The headstock is just like a Portuguese 'guitarra'.
The guitarra has 12 strings (6 pairs) and a cittern shaped body.
My guess is this is some sort of Portuguese hybrid guitarra/small guitar type instrument (and remember the uke evolved from the Portuguese 'braguinha' in the first place).

Thanks Bertie.

And it appears there is a sizable "Portugese-African" population in South Africa.

Thanks for the responses.

The person who posted it works for a luthier in S. Africa, and they can't find anything on it. They think it's a home made instrument, one of a kind. I can't fine any other instrument on the internet with tuners like that.

As I say, check out the 'guitarra portuguesa':

My bet would still be on a guitarra/tiple hybrid. Possibly one of a kind, but definitely 'guitarra' influenced.

AH! Thanks Bertie... I'd looked up guitarra, but somehow missed the "guitarra portuguesa" with the similar tuning setup.

You're probably right, that it's a hybrid.
