I'm really interested in getting a Yamaha Guitalele, but not too into the all laminate construction.
It looks like this Strunal 1/4 size guitar has the same wide neck, scale length and body size (and presumable the same ADGCEa tuning) , but my eyes may deceive me. Here's a site that has the Guitalele dimensions in metric:

http://uk.shopping.com/xPO-Yamaha-Yamaha-GL1

And the Strunal Dimensions in "Standard"

http://www.smallguitars.com/catalog/78-1-4_size_STO_1-4_size_Oak-Spruce_classical_guitar

to me, they look almost identical, but I'd love some double checking or to hear some experience with either instruments.
Thanks

Below are URL's for videos featuring instrumentals played on that instrument.  Sounds pretty good to me:

The Yamaha GL-1 guitalele is apparently carried only in Europe - I can't find any U.S.A. dealers that sell it.

Since you requested an alternative to the Yamaha GL-1 guitalele (which is not sold at all in the U.S. - the closest dealer is in Canada), the closest instrument I can think of is the requinto, a Mexican short-scale nylon string guitar.  The requinto is the lead instrument in Mexican mariachi bands.   It has a scale length closer to a baritone (about 20-21 inches or so).  There is a dealer that sells a requinto with a solid spruce top, cutaway, and pickup for about $130:

http://jacksmusicstore.com/catalog/guitar/instruments/hispanic/ftd-ins-hsp-a~sonora

CRESTWOOD SONORA REQUINTO $129.75

Solid Spruce Top; Rosewood fingerboard and bridge; Rosewood back and sides; 3 ply celluloid bound body; EQ/preamp with 3 bands of EQ, batter check, volume control and pop up battery access

Here's another dealer (I've ordered from them before) that sells a solid spruce top requinto for $146:

http://www.elevation-music.com/lulgausotopm.html

Body Feature: Cutaway
Top: Solid Spruce (LG-RQ2)
Back & Sides: Mahogany
Fretboard: Rosewood
Neck: 2-Piece Mahogany
Finish Type: Gloss
Rosette: Multi-Colored
Tuner Machines: Nickel-Plated
Pickup: N/A
Scale Length: 21.5"
Truss Rod: N/A

Frets: 18
Binding: 3-Ply
Purfling: 2-Ply (w/b)
Bridge: Rosewood
Strings: AXL
Upper Bout: 10-1/8"
Lower Bout: 13-1/4"
Nut, Width: 1-7/8"
Depth: 3-15/16"
Body Length: 16-5/8"
Total Length: 34"

Wow, that looks like a good buy.  How are they normally tuned?  Standard guitar tuning?

No, with the much shorter scale, standard guitar tuning wouldn't work because the nylon strings would be too slack to stay in tune or sound good.  Requinto tuning is usually ADGCEA - basically, the same as "low-G" ukulele tuning except with 2 lower bass strings.

Didn't you see my review?

http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/forum19/7144.html

I own a strunal solid cedar top 1/4 scale, theres pics with it by my tenor 8 string, its exactly what you want.  It's tones a bit richer and warmer, maybe not as bright, as the guitalele.  Throw some high tension nylon guitar strings and tune that bad boy up to ADGCEA you'll love it I promise.  Go through meantone.

You know what would be really cool? A classical guitar quartet using requintos and ukuleles for the upper parts.
