I have been looking for an upgrade ukulele, preferably a tenor or concert and am considering the Lanikai CK-C Concert Ukulele.  Is this a wise choice?

I am presently playing a laminated mahogany tenor or concert with a plastic bridge.

Jim:

I have the tenor version of that uke, and it's a laminated koa top, and a bit low in volume.  For a upgrade, get a uke with a solid top.  I recommend Lanikai's solid spruce top series (I own a concert and an 8-string tenor); if you're looking for a concert, the Lanikai S-C sells for about $100, and the tenor S-T sells for as low as $120.  The cutaway S-TEQ model with built in pick up sells for $170.

I own the Lanakai CK-Teq with the laminated koa top and its a good uke but I would always go with a solid top, which from lanikia is actually cheaper than the CK models.

I'd be looking at solid ukes. IMO, the solid-spruce topped Lanikais don't really sound better. They build those tops too thick.

The CK series sounds good, but it is laminate.

Lanikai makes a solid-hog uke, and so does Ohana. If you want something wonderful, I'd consider Kiwaya.

Ohana Cedar-topped ukes sound loud (around $200)-

or the beautiful Kiwaya (around $500):

If the Ohana is solid wood, then it is better. But I think these two models are probably identical.

Always go for the solid wood, especially on the tops.
