Wondered if anyone had tab-ed out island style music to give the ukulele a steel drum sound? Seems that the uke would work well for that sound. Are there any suggestions, I have never run across that style of ukulele music.

I'm not sure what you meant by "tabbed out island music with a steel drum sound."  A steel drum is a very different instrument than a uke - it is played with mallets, playing single or double notes; because of the short sustain, the playing style makes use of repetitive notes.  Even if you had steel drum music/tab, it would not sound the same to attempt to play it on a uke.

Will, thanks for the note. Guess I was thinking that since the ukulele had a bright sound that perhaps someone had come up with some note or improvised chords that came close to the steel drum sound.

Perhaps it would be more a matter of creating that calypso rhythm and the style of doubling notes.

One of the bands I play with, A Bunch Of Coconuts, plays a mix of Hawaiian, calypso, tropical, and island music.  I've brought some of Harry Belafonte's old calypso songs into our repertoire, including "Island In The Sun."  Sloop John B was originally a calypso song from the Bahamas (brought to America during the 1920's by poet laureate Carl Sandburg, who was also a banjo player).  We have up to 5 ukulele players in this musical group (I play guitar with this group), so have a listen:

Island In The Sun

Thanks Will, That pretty much is the island sound I was thinking of, guess one just need to pick the right songs.

Enjoyed listening to most of the Coconuts songs, Sloop John B is great, always liked Talk Dirty in Haw, //   think that is a John Prine song?

Thanks, Art.

Yes, Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian is a John Prine song.  We play our rendition of it at a much faster tempo than his original

The 12-string guitar intro that I use for Sloop John B is patterned after the Kingston Trio's version.
