Will wrote: Okay, so it's a $100 Mahalo, but it's got a Telecaster style body, so it's at least Fender-inspired...Yes, I saw a few of those ukes in Ottawa last year. Didn't care much for the sound of any of them, but at $100 or so, it attracted me for the novelty factor. Had I been driving, not flying home, I would have picked one up. I'm driving this year so who knows...

I really like the looks and description of the Cordoba 25CK Concert Ukulele shown above the Fender and Martins. Has anyone tried these?

They are made from some Acacia tree, cousin to Koa, but not Koa. Possibly Australian Blackwood. The Cordoba instruments have serious quality control issues, in my opinion. They can be anywhere from OK sounding to klunkers.

The Fender uke is handcrafted in Indonesia. IMHO, it sounds as good as it looks. Check out this myspace link and hear it for yourself. USMSRP $400 solid mahogany and rosewood fret board. Whaddya Think??? Last edited on Wed Apr 8th, 2009 09:17 pm by Dino |

Several other ukes are made in Indonesia, including Mele and Pono. While still a factory-made instrument, Indonesian-made ukes have a reasonably good reputation for quality.

I have an OU5 made in China which is overbuilt and sounds weak, and it needed a lot of setup work to get it playable. However I now know two folks that have OU5s made in Indonesia that are entirely different animals. Both are a much lighter build and much better sounding than mine. Indo makes good stuff IMO. I also have a Washburn 000 guitar made in Indo that's very nicely built, and plays and sounds great. I'm still planning on getting the $150 lam mahogany Fender as soon as I run across one in a store that I can try out. Last edited on Sat Apr 11th, 2009 01:46 am by TomHB |

But I have picked up and doodled with every uke I've come across for a couple years, and this one beat most of the others, which were, admittedly mostly not quality instruments. I didnt see what they were asking for this one but I'm definitely going to go back and try it again...

I went back and played it again. Its a nice looking instrument. Seemed like intonation was good up the neck (to my ear, which isnt perfect). I saw a couple spots where the finish was a bit sloppy. Dont know if thats a sign that there's worse problems lurking or not, but it still sounds nice too. Real nice. Plays nice. Didnt buy it because it was $269, but I think I'd take a chance on a used one at half that...

I bought one of the koa wood Fenders in late April. I really like it. The headstock makes it easy to tune and the finish is flawless. It comes with its own gigbag because it's too long for normal tenor bags. Right now Uke World has them and a couple of other internet sites advertise them. With the Aquila strings it sounds great. I played it at our local coffee shop here and I thought it sounded good. Since it is new there aren't many out there but I think it will do well. Traditionalists might not like the headstock but some people thought talking movies were just a passing fad. Joe T

I agree Joe. I bought the Fender Pa'ina two months ago and I look forward to play it all the time and anywhere. I've never owned an all wooden uke and was surprised how light it is. In fact, it's not balanced. The neck is heavier than the body. When I use a strap, it tends to tilt downward. But it's so light and comfortable I don't use my strap. I do love that dark solid mahogany. I think some of the old Martins were made of mahogany. The Telecaster head with the in-line tuning keys makes tuning so easy. This instrument is bound to be a Fender classic. Dino Last edited on Sun Jun 28th, 2009 09:54 am by Dino |
