Yes, I know it's a gimmick and they're bascially cookie-cutter Chinese ukes with a cool headstock, but if any are in stock locally, I'm gonna check them out. I'd FAR prefer a non-electric solid soprano or concert, but I am a sucker for the Tele headstock. Fender has my "number" on that.

At $15O, if the mahogany lam model is decent, I could come home with it... (was thinking of getting a flea w/concert neck to carry around, but maybe... maybe not)

Yes, I was interested in seeing what they had to offer, but because of the price, in my small town it's unlikely even the Fender dealer will stock them. Have to look elsewhere, maybe Toronto or Ottawa.

I'm interested in trying the solid wood tenor, see what sort of sound it has. It's a competitive zone they're coming to amrket in.

They're actually made in Indonesia, which is good IMO. I've seen and owned pretty good stringed products from there, and they have a long history of making stringed instruments. None available locally yet, but I read that they may be considering other sizes, so I'll probably wait, unless the tenor model is surprisingly good.

None are in stock locally. I called and checked around, and it seems they'll be special order for a while (if not forever), so I'm moving on. Not about to buy one unless I can play it first, and I'd prefer a sop or concert anyway.

I'm proud and honored to say that I am one of the first to own a Fender® Ukulele, and I love it. I played the low-end model acoustically, Saturday night in two performances in Scottsdale, with a mic, and it sounded amazing. Used the higher-end model (the mahogany), in recording my "Fender® Bender" song.

I also want to say that Fender® has made a serious commitment to the ukulele market, and when I was at the Fender® factory on Friday, I saw some of the most amazing ukulele prototype samples, which are visions of things to come.

This is Fender's® first entry into the ukulele biz, and they did much research before getting involved in this venture. Their heart and spirit is in it, like every other aspect of their business.

Every uke player should have one in their collection.

Here's a link to my "Fender® Bender" music video, blending a Fender® Stratocaster® with a Fender® acoustic ukulele: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=50844655

Where are they making the ukes?

There is a facility here in the inland empire (Corona, CA).

I don't imagine they are made there.

Fender isn't doing itself any favours with the sort of cheesy advertorial Uke Ray is pumping on all the forums. As far as I can tell, the instruments aren't in stores yet (at least not in Canada).

As for Indonesian ukes: I believe Pono is from there, and Mele too.

Yep Ponos are made on the island of Java, the most populous island in indonesia.

Ian, I think they only exist in some mythical, ethereal place, right next to all the Bushman replacement ukes ;o)

Okay, so it's a $100 Mahalo, but it's got a Telecaster style body, so it's at least Fender-inspired:

But, wait, there's also a Les Paul style uke also:

But Washburn beat Mahalo to the punch a few years ago, when they made Oscar Schmidt uke models of their Idol electric guitar (I own one of these):

I would have thought Gibson through their Epiphone name would have been a more likely candidate for ukes what with their acoustic folk background. Sort of surprising that Fender would go there (although I have a mighty nice Fender banjo from the 80s). But I'm pleased that a major name would enter the ukulele market. That can only mean good things for the growth of the ukulele.

The above commercial is completely uncalled for.  And frankly, I don't like the look of the Fender ukes at all.  Not in their present lineup anyway.  Barf.
