Hello everyone. Just wanted to rave a bit about my new Flea. It's wonderfull! My wife, Holly Uke, were at the Maryland Ren. fest two weeks ago with her father. They have a little "luthier" shop there that sells dulicimers and recordrers and such. Of course I noticed the two ukuleles they had, a Mahlo and a Flea. Having been interested in the Flea since I started playing a year and a half ago I asked to see it. It sounded like angels singing. My wife, seeing the desperation in my eyes, had her father bargin the shop keepers down to $120. It was mine! I love this thing. It has, with out a doubt, the best sound out of all the other ukes we own. We have 7. By the way, If you don't want any atention, don't walk around any kind of gathering wearing a t-shirt that reads" Ukulele Hero" carrying a new uke.

By far My best sounding uke! I just can't belive the sound that comes out of it. I tend to play softly, and with the flea I can play loud enough to be heard when I play with others. Even when My wife,Holly uke, plays her baritone. The tone is better than any of our other ukuleles as well, We have seven between us.

I really haven't heard anything bad about them.  Maybe one day...

Bought one 2 weeks ago from the The Folk Shop in Tucson, AZ. Wasn't planning on buying one-just wanted to try a variety of Ukes, since I live hundreds of miles from a store. I was looking for a Fluke to try, but they were out. They had a couple Fleas and they sounded better than a $600 solid wood uke to me. There was a Tiki Flea that just had to come home with me. Couldn't believe my wife suggested it! I am playing it every day. Far and away better than a cheap one I had been learning on with terrible intonation. I bought some Aquila strings but haven't put them on yet.

Carlsbob -

Isn't "The Folk Shop" a fun place to hang around in for a few hours? I'm almost afraid to go in there, because I wind up playing the banjos and guitars and finding too many of them that want to come home with me!

Yes, Banjo Brad, I found the Folk Shop an amazing place--CandyLand! I am new to stringed instruments and have never seen anything like it. Everywhere you look there is something-even a hurdy gurdy. I live 500 miles away, so I won't have lots of opportunities, but I do pass through at least once a year. My wife, who is much more musically inclined, doesn't mind stopping there--much less than my hour long visits to Woodworker's Source.

I think you will like the Aquila strings, I put them on my Flea a while ago and think it makes a difference.

Artcrocker:
What kind of advantage the Aquila strings have? Does it mean that some strings are compatible with certain instruments, but others might not, or Aquila can match all the ukes? I got a uke 3 years ago, & the strings have not been changed yet. However, my uke really sounds dull. I have no clue what really happens to my instrument, because of strings or the body quality itself? If string-change can make my toy sound good, I'm determined to buy a set of new Aquila; if my uke would not meet the requirement due to its poor quality, my purchase of new strings will make no sense at all. Could you, or someone else, please offer me some suggestions that can help me out with the problem?
Thanks a lot.

I am no string expert, however I have noticed what I believe to be a "nicer" sound from my ukes when going to Aquila strings. I also think the Aquila are easier to finger pick than some of the others.

Changing your strings is certainly Worth a try (no pun intended. There are of course other good strings out there, I have not tryed them.

I decided to put the Aquilas on my Flea and put the Hilos from the Flea on my Santa Rosa (a very cheap Uke with terrible intonation). Now I have two ukes I have to constantly tune. Last night I wasn't inpressed with the Aquilas--it sounded muddy to me. The Hilos on the Santa Rosa? That made a world of a difference (I had previously replaced the original strings with some Martins). I still need to look at lowering the action, but I still like to pick it up when the Flea is wherever I left it.
Today the Flea sounds better. The strings feel different. The differences in the sound is more subtle and I will have to mess with it while it settles in. I like the white strings on the black fretboard-makes it a little easier to see what I am doing.
I enjoy changing the strings. Makes me feel more like a musician. Maybe it is all that tuning practice I get? That and figuring out the chords for the chorus for a current favorite German pop song (36 Grad). Still working on the verses.
