Hi all!

This is my first post. I really want enter the ukulele world but there doesn't seem to be much information on the internet. Let me ask a couple of questions.
First of all, I come from a piano background (played from an early age) and at some point 5-6 years ago I started playing the guitar. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna love the uke, although i've never actually touched one.
The problem is that I live in the UK and there don't seem to be many musical instrument stores that offer many choices (i live in Edinburgh but i'm just a student here, i really am from Athens, Greece).
I found this

http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/4015

but i couldn't find much about this manufacturer on the internet (Moana UK-150).
Should I be looking for a soprano uke? I want it to have that nostalgic sound, not so metallic. Do you guys know any links to stores in the uk and do you have any specific suggestions?
I guess I just want to get my feet wet, so consider me in the price range of 60-120 pounds.

Anyway, anything would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Marios

Hi again. So i went out and got this cheap 35 pound uke.
Strings 4 and 3 are metal and strings 1 and 2 are black. Can i change them and put black strings? Cuz i can only tune it like an octave lower than the usual.

Please post some more information about your new uke.  Does the dealer have a web site with a photo that you can post?

What size is it?  What brand name is it?  Is it a soprano, concert, tenor, or baritone?  The dimensions in the diagram below are in inches... Total length X width of lower body bout X thickness of body

I figured out that it's a tenor uke from the dimensions. I tuned it correctly and it sounds good now. Should the G and C strings be metal?

Your tenor uke probably has what is known as "low-G" tuning, GCEA.  Some other tenor ukes, and most smaller ukes (concerts, sopranos) have a "high-G" string that is one octave higher, gCEA.

Those low G and C strings are not metal - they have a nylon core, but with external copper or aluminum windings on them to add mass, allowing them to play at a lower pitch.  Without the metallic windings, an equivalent bare nylon string would have to be so thick that it would sound very dull.

It is possible to get a set of new strings without any metal windings, but these would have to be made of material that is denser than nylon, which would allow them to be thinner.  Such strings would include fluorocarbon, such as those made by Worth strings:

Tenor ukes are great. My favourite size. Does your uke have a label that says where it was made?
