Hi, everyone: Needing your help. When playing songs with fingerpicking style, is it possible or allowable for the player to combine some other styles, like clawhammer into it? A friend of mine, whose name is Al Smith, sent me a national anthem with fingerpicking style. After practicing it, I found mixing the clawhammer style at certain single tones will make the song more listenable. However, I'm not sure if this way of playing uke will be acceptable, because I've learned from our respected instructor Richard that the clawhammer style has its specific way of plucking the strings & the typical rhythm of bum-ditty. So, without bum-ditty but only stroking down on the strings with one finger will be considered awkward & nonstandard, or a free-style at one's discretion? Or, so long as the song is well-performed, no matter what the style may be, it will be okay? Any suggestion? Thanks a lot in advance.

Theo... Anything is acceptable as long as it sounds good. You can mix any styles you want to as long as you can fit them together, or you can even make up a style of your own if you come up with something unique. There are no unbreakable rules when playing the uke or any other instrument.

Richard, thanks a lot for your encouragement. What you told me may lead me to a self-satisfactory situation where one doesn't need to stick to a fixed mode.
