Howdie!

I just got my first uke(fluke) off of Ebay.

and they came with this black string set.

they don't have the clear coating on them.. it is really dry..

Whenever I slide.. you can hear my finger sliding so LOUD!!

and I assume the strings that came with the fluke are Hilo strings...

and they sound too thin... i am not really liking them..

I hear Aquila Nylgut strings are great.. and also Worth... but I can't really find them here...(winnipeg, MB)

could you recommend one for me??

thanks! cheers!

You can order Aquilas here:

http://www.juststrings.com/aquilaukulele.html

or on Ebay from musicguymic (where they may even be cheaper).

My Fluke had black stings (purchased in a local store), but they were glossy and didn't squeak under my fingers. They seemed more like GHS than Hilos, and sounded fine. However I bought some Hilos locally for another uke and couldn't stand all the squeaking (they had a dull/matte finish) so I took them off the same day and put Aquilas on, which have a great feel, and tone -- and NO squeak!

I now have Aquilas on my tenor Fluke (and all my other ukes) and they sound great. Also a nice contrast if you have the black plastic fretboard (Aquilas being white).

Check out Guadalupe Custom Strings.  They make their own strings.  I am using a set on my concert and they are excellent.  I do not plan to use any other strings.  Uke strings can be made to order in several different colors as well, if that happens to be to your likeing.

I went to a local music store.. today

and they had a ohana GK-35

I believe it comes with Aquila.. and it felt pretty squeaky..

i mean compare to my strings they are way better.. but it felt pretty squeaky..

and the guy at the store said, that uke has been on display for over 9months now...

could that be why the strings were like that??

ALL strings squeak some. Especially if you slide your fingers up and down quickly. Just in the case of the Hilos I bought, I couldn't even change chords without a very loud and annoying squeak. With Aquilas, or GHS, it's never been noticeable.

BTW, many folks here swear by Worth strings as well. I haven't tried them, so don't be limited by what I say :D

Ultimately, I'd try a few brands, and see what suits your fingers, and ear.

Very few have anything bad to say about Aquila, however.

Right on!

I will definitely try a few brands,

how about martins or Daddario??

the local stores only had martin and Daddario...

however when i play the classic guitar, the string squeak on the nylon strings is the minimum closer to non..

it is quite hard to find what I like...

I'm one that doesn't like Aquila.

Try Fremont or Worth clear, I use the Worth CD, and you can find Fremont on ebay, musicguymic's store, or just search.

And you'll get no squeak.

This is a soprano/concert?

CD is higher tension, the Fremont are the same, you can probably find those easier. Keep in mind higher tension on a uke is still easy, just a little more stiffness to the string, nice attack, easy to fingerpick.

I just put D'Addario J71s on a tenor Pono and I'm still a bit iffy on them. I think Aquilas sound better, but I need to give them a bit more time to settle in. They seem a bit less bright compared to Aquilas, but it's not a bad sound, just different.

Ko'olau are also very nice strings and I have them on a couple of ukes as well. I actually replaced a set of Ko'olaus with wound G and C strings on the Pono after a C string snapped. Thought I'd replace the whole set. The Ko'olaus were quite nice and I liked the wound strings for this particular uke.
