I was at Sam Ash today and played the new S-O Martin soprano. I was shocked when the sales guy told me it was only $299. Do you think this is a good deal for a brand new Mexican made solid mahogany Martin uke? Is it a good investment as a collectible? ![]()

For whatever reasons, I have seldom read a good review of the Martin S-0 uke, because there are thousands of vintage Martin ukes that it is compared to; those vintage Martin ukes have been played for six or seven decades and have that "seasoned sound" that a new instrument can't match. So, I would say that the investment potential of the imported Martin uke is nil. That being said, I have a few friends who own the Martin S-O uke, and are very happy with it; let your own ears be the judge - the only person the uke has to please is you, not other players or peers. If you were totally sold on a new Martin SO, 299 is still too high. I think street price on the secondary market is closer to 200. I've played the SO and found it a decent enough uke, sounded ok, nothing special, intonated fairly well. I do not think this will be a collectors item, as it was hecho in Mexico, but if you've found one and like it as a player, get it.

I wasn't really interested in it's playability even though it did sound decent but more of an investment purpose. Thanks Will and Neal for your thoughts. Seems like the new Hawaiian made ukes would be a better investment.

Dino, I gotta say, buying any instrument for investment purposes is a worse bet than the stock market. But if you find an instrument that makes you smile, no matter what kind of instrument, you can bet it'll be worth something down the road.
