I just wanted to introduce myself. I've played guitar since I was twelve and more recently (about a year) the ukulele. I was born in Hawaii and fingered I'd buy ukulele because all Hawaiians do. I bought it six years ago. I never played it but I bought it because I liked the sound and it's louder most wooden soprano ukes. The uke is an Applause/Ovation soprano UA-20 with a high G string. Last year I joined a halau (hula club/group) in Riverside, CA called Suzy's Hula. Suzy Jackson also taught ukulele and speaks Hawaiian. I finally learned to play the ukulele for Hawaiian songs. I performed IZ's classic Over the Rainbow in an annual club showcase. I changed the high G string to a low G. I met with Herb Ohta from Hawaii last week. He told me most Hawaiian uke players use the low G string. I've never performed more with my guitar than I have with my ukulele (less than a year). I did purchase another Applause UAE-20 but with a pickup on an Elliot-Trace TA50 amp. I've been a long time fan of IZ and wanted that same sound. I found out that though he has been photographed with a soprano he played a tenor (I think Kamaka). I enjoy watching and learning from YouTube. It's amazing what you can pick up from watching YouTube. I'm hoping to learn more from your experiences and maybe I might be able to add something. Aloha Everyone Dino

Welcome to ezFolk! Dino, we have a Riverside ukulele group that gets together on the first Sunday of the month at 1pm in the basement of Back to the Grind on University (in the downtown). Claremont is also having their folk music festival the day before (May 3). There will be at least two ukulele workshops offered that day. http://www.inticketing.com/evinfo.php?eventid=23859 It must have been a blast meeting Herb Ohta. Where did you meet him? At the Encinitas group meeting last Wednesday?

Dino-- As an owner of an Applause Ovation soprano as well, I'm curious about the low G string switch. What strings did you have on there? What type of low G string did you replace it with? And, most importantly, how did it sound??? I'd never thought of switching out my soprano Applause Ovation with a low G because I thought it really wouldn't "work" well. Any input? Oh--and welcome to the forum!

Hi Tonya, I personally like the sound of the low G string over the high G. It gives the soprano uke a more fuller sound with more bass. Scales are easier to play and the sound richer. I purchased Aquila low G from eBay. I wanted that same sound that IZ did on Over the Rainbow. You can definitely hear him hit that low G bass on that song. Ukeforever...I met Herb Ohta Jr. in Torrance at a uke shop called Island Fantasy where he gave individual uke lessons. Island Fantasy has a pretty nice selection of ukes and strings. Thanks for the welcome y'all. Dino
