I will probably give Chicago and Cleveland a wide berth on my way back from Erie PA. Well I cant really avoid them but I can avoid stopping and probably will. Are there are good uke shops in any of these other smaller cities?

Here's a link to what Spruce Tree Music in Madison, WI has to offer for ukuleles: http://www.sprucetreemusic.com/ukes.html FWIW, Spruce Tree Music also helps to support folk music programming on Wisconsin Public Radio. If you're in Wisconsin on a Sunday you can tune it in from 5pm to 8pm. Hope this helps!

Are there are good uke shops in any of these other smaller cities? Don't write off Chicago just yet. In your original post, you had only asked about music stores in downtown, near Union Station, that carried ukuleles. (Even if those defunct downtown music stores were still in business, they carried mostly pianos and guitars, not ukes.) The best place in Chicago to buy ukuleles is the fabulous Different Strummer, the music store operated by the Old Town School of Folk Music; they carry the biggest selection (Koaloha, Mele, Lanikai, Bushman, National) that I know of: http://www.oldtownschool.org/strummer/ukuleles.html The Different Strummer is located 10 miles north of downtown, and is accessible by elevated train from downtown Chicago. You need to get to Wells Street, near the financial district, about a half mile east of Union Station. The pair of elevated railroad tracks circle the downtown area, and are known locally as "The Loop," and you would need to get on at Quincy/Wells or Washington/Wells, ride the Brown Line train to the Western (Avenue) stop, walk south on Lincoln Avenue for about 2 blocks.

Yeah, but I'm not keen on spending my layover from the train riding the el around, especially since it will be rush hour. And I'm not keen on driving around Chicago when/if I come back through. I grew up there, and left because I dont like it! But thanks for the suggestion. Right now there is doubt I will even come that way. I had plans to do some work in Madison but that is shaky now. If that falls through I will come north through Michigan and stop at Elderly, and avoid a lot of traffic and headaches.

You'll really like Elderly Instruments in Lansing; I was there once in 1999. After concluding an early afternoon business meeting, I had to kill 4 hours before a return flight back to Chicago, so I drove up the street a mile and spent over 2 hours there. I brought my old autoharp with me and got a trade-in on a better one.

Oh crap, autoharp! And I thought a uke would be my last stringed instrument for sure...I forgot all about autoharps.

Will, Thanks for the info on Different Strummer, I was visiting a friend who lives on the north side of Chicago last weekend and it would have been nice to drop by. Maybe next time!
