The Oscar Schmidt Idol OU14E concert uke sounds much better unplugged with Aquila Nylgut strings on it than with the stock black nylon strings. Any store model of that uke will almost certainly have the original stock strings on it. Actually, this was at the Ottawa Folk Centre and every instrument they had on display that I tried was in tune, including all the ukes. The sales woman had a chromatic tuner on a lanyard and even tweaked one uke a bit to get it to pitch before handing it to me. That being said, the OS ukes didn't move me quite enogh even when tuned. I was tempted by the Cole Clark, but at $1,100, my interest outpaced my financial reach. I might have been able to get away with coming home with a $100 uke in my luggage, but not one 11 times that!
