This may be the answer.  I'll try it out.  I know a lot of folks, like Gerald suggested, find it hard to find things to say to, so I thought this may be easier for folks to give feedback without writing long, or short response. It can be done anonymoulsy, too.

It should have the name of the song in the poll, then you can decide the parameters.  This isn't to stop anyone from commenting, please feel free, but it'll free you up from feeling obligated to do so.  And, more importantly, give the artist the feedback that I feel is necessary for growth.

So, maybe I'll do another poll on if this is a good suggestion?

Neal,

I'm all for anything that works, so if people can be persuaded to do it that would be great. Of course the artists need to be sure to have a direct link to the song. I would love to see more people using the polls, both creating them and also participating in polls other people created. Having created most of the polls that we've had in these forums, I'm sorry to say there is usually little response.

I'm posting a graphic below for the forum stats for the first 11 days of June. It's almost shocking when you look at the numbers. There have been an average of 27 forum messages a day out of 11,205 forum page views per day. That would pretty much give you the idea that most people aren't going to say anything, which is okay... I'm glad to know they're at least reading the messages. What would really be great would be for every visitor to post just 1 message each week. I know that's not possible, but if just 10% of the people would do it there would be a huge difference. If anybody's got any ideas on how to bring a little life to the party let me know. Maybe we need to run a contest or something. People like prizes.

Aww Scrooner, that's cool, you'll get in the groove.  Just lay back, learn stuff, get some music up, and we'll listen!

Always some good stuff to learn here.

Richard, some interesting statistics there......

The stats are very interesting.  And Neil, do you have a link to the song on this site?  I'm not up with MySpace.

Hi leeky desk.  Yes, the songs are on my myspace page, but there's no song for this topic, just a suggestion to get feedback for all of us when we DO post a song.

Richard, when I read the thread that inspired this one, I was thinking along those lines, some sort of poll for rating the song b/c its so hard to criticize something that we all as players realize is so near and dear to the artist's heart.  As for myself, I'm my own worst critic, and if I ever get something I'm moderately satisified with, I might post it.  But playing its purely an avocation to me, so I know I "won't quit my day job" and couldn't w/ music anyway :D.

Hi Richard,

Your stats are very interesting & very true! It is much appreciated by most of us to hear from people that go out of thier way to comment. But its ok to just listen to and nice to know your music is being heard and appreciated.

Holley :)

Holley, it is good to know that your music is being listened to.  My view is that if you announce that you'd like folks to listen to a new song you've done, well, wouldn't it be nice for some feedback?

On Myspace there are 3 music review groups, you are allowed to post one song per month, and other musicians put in their .02.  Sometimes it's just a comment that there's to much reverb, or the vocals are too far back, sometimes it's a kudos on good work.

I think in this case here at EzFolk, the poll question would work great.  It let's folks comment annonymously, and it's easy to do.

I agree the polls will show a variety of results that will give us another insight.

But-

You would need a standardized list of queries, including such choices as:
98. Read the thread, it doesn't sound like my type of music so I didn't click through.
99. Can't stand listening ot synthethizer stuff.
145. Never listen to Old Time Fiddle.
247. You didn't post an LP link, and I'm on dial-up, so I can't listen.
etc.

As you can see, such a list would quickly get out of hand, and there would have to be a way of every poster to add the entire poll to their posting.

I don't really see anyway you can achieve the results you are looking for. I think that here, as elsewhere, you need to rely on the people who are interested in remarking on your work to make comments. A possible method, that requires a little work on the listeners' part, might be to post the link to your music page, with your latest song on the top, and hoping that whoever listens takes the minute to click the "rating" button and rate it.  Sometimes I hear something that I really like but don't have time to post something here, or try to dig through the layers of the board to reach the artist's page, find the tune/song, and post a comment.

I also have had posts deleted by Richard, and I don't blame him, when I have gone overboard on a particular artist or song that set my teeth on edge. Sometimes, silence is the best choice.

Brad

Holley-

The posts I had deleted I really probably never should have let get posted anyway. I got to ranting about electronics and weird punk-like, drum-heavy stuff that I have absolutely no interest in. The posters were new members, and Richard assumed, rightly I see now, that I probably would have discouraged their participation in the site.

At the time, Richard was expanding the boundries, and I was (maybe still am, to some extent) not exactly on the same page as he was/is.

It is better that they probably weren't seen by anybody else!

Brad (Who still prefers his music acoustic, folk and Old Time, but is willing to allow ezFolk to expand)

On my next song I'll do a poll instead if a troll:P, then we'll have a little more info as to if it's a viable alternative.

Let me rephrase, Some of us appreciate the constructive critisism  though others can be fragile may really not be ready for it. In that case maybe those kind of comments should be sent privately? or maybe we should be careful what we ask for.

Hi holley, the whole point is pretty much no one comments, even if asked for it.  I don't think it's because the folks here don't care, it's more of a time issue and just what to say.

I suppose if you wanted a critique you could ask for it, but I'm finding most people are uncomfortable with that.  This topic piggy-backs on the "message to the board" topic.

I agree, a few sentences would be nice, but it just doesn't work for a variety of reasons.

I'm here with the results of my 'test' with using the poll.

The song was posted here, in this forum, and in the "promote your music" forum, identical posts, identical polls.  The title of the post was "New Song- a little R&B on saxophone and uke"

It doesn't work.

Here's some other statistics.  300 views of the thread on the new song, 5 responses total in both forums 6 poll answers.  35 listens to the song.

Thanks to those that participated and commented, it's appreciated.:)  Even BanjoBrad's backhand compliment.  I'll work on those vocals Brad.

Neal-

Not a backhand at all, I just thought the music was more interesting than trying to listen to words. Probably 90% of my music listening and making, is tunes, not songs. Usually I am doing 14 other things at the same time I have music on and can't spare the time and mental processes to 'listen' to words.

Jazz and Blues (in the jazz area) particularly, are instrumental music to me. If the tune catches me, I build my own mental images and words just get in the way.

Incidently, I probably dropped into the thread 4 or 5 times before I had a chance to go check out the song, then I dropped back by several times later to check on what was being said, if anything. This, I think, is one of the reasons I don't think you can equate thread visits with your statistics.

Brad
