I broke down and bought one. I'm been eyeing one for a while and was interested in an instrument that wasn't quite factory made, but not quite handmade either. What can I say, it's beutiful AND I've been playing a toy for the last few months. It's amazing the difference in quality, sounds, weight, fretboard....EVERYTHING. For all of you out there that are afraid of getting a soprano because you have large man-hands, fear not! The fretboard is wider than my Hilo's (the toy) Hilo: Nut 3.5cm Fret 12 4.5cm Akulele: Nut 4.1cm Fret 12 4.8cm Also notable on the Akulele: fret markers on 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 Fret 15 is actually usable. Intonation is good. Tuners look and work like a dream. Here's some pictures if you are interested: http://sleeper.978.org/~jef/tmp1/akulele/ Enough typing, I'm going back to playing with it -Jef Last edited on Thu Dec 16th, 2004 06:27 am by jef |

Hey Jef, The Akuleles sure are nice. I've got one of the standard ones that has a carved pineapple on the back. It's amazingly loud and has a beautiful tone and is one of the best ukes I've ever played. I know you're going to love yours. I bought mine at Elderly about 3 years ago when they first started selling them and I noticed they're still using the pictures of my very uke in their ad on the Elderly website... http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/AKU1DLX.htm Have fun

Jef, Congratulations. I also have an Akulele, a plain back soprano with the wider fingerboard, that I'm very fond of. It's my 'best' soprano, loud, pleasing tone, and with a generous number of frets for a soprano, 16 of them. I've been tempted by the Akulele's, even tried one a couple of years ago, and I couldn't resist Joseph Todaro's display at the UHoF Expo a few months ago. I swapped the strings for Nylguts. What are you fellows using? (Pauline's rule number 1, always change the strings on a new instrument even if the strings it came with are perfect for it. Pauline

I got the strings that came on it It's got a wound C string which sounds really sweet on it. Maybe I'll get some new strings for it for Christmas or something. As for sound and playability, I'm so impressed. Yeah it was a little more than I wanted to spend on it, but I'm not complaining now. It acutally sounds like an instrument and not a silly toy. I'm looking for more fingerpicking songs to play on it now, it sounds so NICE -Jef

jef, I agree with you on the wound C. I forgot that stayed on when Nylguts replaced the other 3 strings. There was something I didn't like to hear in the black strings, though it may well have been imagination and adherence to rule #1. Pauline
