Is there one great repository for uke chords or uke tabs? I am forever searching for music chords, especially for new music chords. More modern music. Sure there are plenty of fine books out there for all of the old school uke around the campfire, singing in the canoe, or Hawaiian music....but what if one wants to play something of a different interest, such as Sting, Pink Martini, cocktail music, French cabaret music, Badly Drawn boy, Tish Hinohosa....more modern? I tend to search E-Tabs or OLGA a lot, but often it's not east to make it work very easy for the uke. I think with all teh intereset in uke today, there is a great opportunity to put together a great chord/tab site for everything uke. It would be a great repository for contributors, like E-Tabs does. Anyone know of such a site? Mark in Portland

Mark, You probably already know more about what's on the other uke sites than I do so I doubt I can provide you with anything along those lines. Maybe somebody else will know of some. The big problem with more modern music is that it's copyright protected. There are laws that prohibit the use of other people's original work and most people respect those laws and that's why you find a lot of old songs (pre-1923) on this and other sites... they're in the public domain and can be used freely. That works out okay for ezFolk because it's a folk music site anyway and there are plenty of old folk songs that are appreciated, not only for their historic value but also because they're still really great songs. I took a look at the OLGA site just now and saw this on the front page... The Lyrics Archive R.I.P. (10/02/01) The lyrics archive, which began a long time ago (i.e. pre 1990) at ftp.uwp.edu (the university of wisconsin, parkside) and was taken up at lyrics.ch has been removed entirely. lyrics.ch was threatened by HFA a few years ago and was working with them on a new site, songfile.com, which has now, without explanation, removed all the lyric files. Also, when I clicked on the "About OLGA" link, I read the following... More History The archive was begun by James Bender at the Univ. of Las Vegas (UNLV). Judging by the earliest files found in the old archive, this was in 92. In 1994, cathal woods followed James Bender as archivist, and he has been the archivist since then, (except for the period when the archive was closed in 98.) In 1996, UNLV was contacted by EMI Publishing, who alleged copyright breach. UNLV kicked OLGA off its server, but no threat was ever made against OLGA, so we went wandering around looking for a new home, a journey only recently ended at iocus.com. In 1998 OLGA was threatened by HFA, who, like EMI before them, refused to say exactly which songs they were claiming and to provide ANY information about licensing, and gave us seven days to close the entire archive. OLGA closed the old archive. As a result, there came to be... OLGA Inc OLGA incorporated. This is where we are today. In order to pursue a legal resolution to the legality of by-ear transcriptions, OLGA needs to raise funds. So if you want to go on freely sharing crd and tab on the internet, please make a donation to OLGA or buy a shirt. We're also running advertisements *on the web pages only* (not on files). OLGA is a registered non-profit organization. (end of file and back to my commentary) Notice the part about "In order to pursue a legal resolution... OLGA needs to raise funds. You see, that's the problem that is encountered with "modern" music. You end up in a legal battle. Most small websites (or their owners) are not equipped to defend themselves against that type of thing. I'm certainly not, and as much as I'd love to fill ezFolk with tons of "new" music, I won't be going that route. It's tempting, and it would really be easy to do. There's access to the recordings and sheet music already and it would be no problem at all for me to post the latest new songs to share with the whole world. That would be great... for a while at least. Way back in the 20th century (I think it was 1989) I owned a public domain software business that did pretty well. I had a standing order for 5000 disks a week from a company that sold us blank disks and we'd fill up both sides of the disks with public domain programs and sell them. One day I got a letter from a lawyer who represented Compute magazine. If you remember Compute, they printed source code for small programs that you could type into your computer and save. Everybody considered them to be public domain programs and most PD companies distributed them. Well, Compute didn't consider them to be PD and the lawyer ordered us to stop distributing these programs immediately. They enclosed a copy of my 64-page printed catalog and had highlighted all of their copyrighted programs. The previous week I had just sent out 20,000 catalogs. Of course there was no way I could fight them in court, so the only recourse I had was to revise my catalog and print and send a new catalog (at a huge expense) and then spend weeks trying to make everything right with customers who ordered those programs before the revised came out, yada, yada, yada. You get the idea. It was not a pretty sight and it gave me an appreciation for copyrights that I didn't have before. Having said all of that, there are websites where you can find copyright protected music. They don't worry about it and they might never come under scrutiny. However, they might be held accountable for it one day, and that's a chance most people (including me) are not willing to take, not to mention that the majority of websites (including this one) respect the rights of those who have created those original works and feel that their copyrights should be enforced. Hope I didn't get too long-winded there. I would encourage you though to learn techniques on the uke that you can apply to any type of music. There is nothing at all to keep you from learning any songs you like as long as you learn the basic techniques of playing. It's all chords and notes, and if you want to learn a Sting song that's great, and it's easy to find the chords to it as well as the melody. All you have to do is apply it to the uke, which should be a fairly simple process as long as you have the basics down. Good luck, Richard

Hey Mark... I'm not sure I understood the question. Do you mean you're wondering if the reason you're able to find lyrics along with the chords on e-tabs.org is because they are somebody's interpretation of the chords and therefore it's okay? I don't think that's it. My guess is that e-tabs is not as worried about the copyrights because they're not located in the United States. Here's their contact information... Contact Info for e-tabs.org: Maxime Sabourin 140 route de la reine Boulogne, 92100France The copyrights are still in effect in foreign countries but it's probably just a lot harder to go after people outside the US. I noticed recently when someone mentioned one of the big tab sites (I forget which one) the contact info was in Russia.
